I know some American academics who have retired from the UC
sytem, took their retirement and then another full time academic job
somewhere else.
Another is in her 50s will eventually retire at full salary from a state
university in the Mid-West, full salary is probably around $80,000 now.
Of the all the nieces and nephews I have only two are working for
public agencies, one is a teacher in California, the other works
in a government job in California. Of all the nieces and nephews only
these two have good incomes and retirements. The others are in more
precarious situations living in the world of private industry.
The comfortable people around me in France I know worked for the
government, like myself.

And you are supported by the uncomfortable people working in the private
sector that pay the taxes.

Neither are all those who earn close to $100,000 a year,
and have guaranteed jobs and golden retirements.

Being a government worker does not relieve you from paying taxes!

I suspect that Maxi has not been presented with the opportunity to change
sides. So I will leave him with the advice of Yogi Bera.

His income is so low he can't be paying much tax. I do hope he
declares all the hand outs he gets from friends and passing royalty.

There's no way I could get a government job. Most of them require
French nationality.

Are you sure? If I remember correctly, Federal workers in the U.S.
don't have to pay Social Security.
