Because it makes it clearer which part of a thread you're responding to,
and if you're using a threaded newsreader, enables you to see who is
responding to what you wrote- which is useful assuming that you don't
always have the time or inclination to read every post.

Because it makes it clearer which part of a thread you're responding to,
and if you're using a threaded newsreader, enables you to see who is
responding to what you wrote- which is useful assuming that you don't
always have the time or inclination to read every post.

I add that it is often the most convenient way to compose posts, which
is why I might make a number of contributions to the one thread in the
same day. I am grateful to David for giving me such a clear rationale
for my behaviour.
