Default Car Rental

I'm going to Wales next month and am looking to rent a car. It seems that
all the agencies I've tried want to hit you over the head for the Super CDW.
I have found some reasonably priced rates with CDW and Theft included but
they have an excess (deductible) of about $1000 usd. That's pretty expensive
if you do get your car stolen or end up in a wreck.

The Super CDW at all the places I've tried costs about 50% of the actual
rental. I am considering just using my AMEX rental car feature but I don't
like that route. Here's why. If you do get your car stolen and the Theft is
insured on the credit card, the rental agency will bill the ENTIRE value of
the car onto your card!

Does anyone know how I can get full coverage without paying a ton of money?

Thanks,
Frank

AM/EX covers for CDW so you don't need to purchase additional. At
least our corporate AM/EX does.

One tip: The UK term is 'crash' or 'accident', wrecks are usually sunken
ships.

I can't see any situations where that would happen. Although I believe the
law is to provide only third party cover, I haven't encountered any rental
agency in the UK which doesn't include fully comprehensive cover in the base
price of the car. The only thing is they usually include a £500 excess on
that. i.e. you never have to pay more than £500 no matter what happens to
the car. I would suggest if you find a company which is not including that
in their base price, steer well clear.

Most of them then off an additional cover which will reduce the excess to
zero or a more reasonable amount such as £75.00. I've usually paid about
£7.50 per day for this but it can go to around £5.00 per day if you hire a
car for a longer time. I used to use National before I bought my own car,
they were always good.

Insurance does cost I'm afraid.

I think so. Did last year in London. Purposely used my Corp AM/EX to
pay for a vacation rental and later reimbursed the company.
Fortunately did not have an accident to find out if it actually works.

You have to decline the car rental company's CDW/LDW in order for the AMEX
card insurance to be valid; therefore, the car rental company has every
right to charge the full value of the car on the credit card since the car
has no other coverage!

I called AMEX and it is valid in the U.K. (including Wales).

Thanks,
Frank

Rent with a credit card which will cover the mandatory insurance which
is not part of the rental agreement.

To which I should have added that my last rental in the UK went as
follows:

Rental included:
VAT Tax
Unlimited mileage
3rd party liability insurance
(these are pretty much standard in UK rentals)

Rental Excluded:
Collision Damage Waver (CDW)
Theft Protection
Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)

The additional insurance was covered by my credit card.
