Just eat the stuff, the whale won't miss a small bit. I did, and it's
really good, albeit expensive. A bit like a good steak IIRC.

I don't see any difference between whale meat and any other kind of
meat/fish. It's still just an animal. Besides, you're very unlikely to
encounter whale meat in Norway. I've never seen it or eaten it, and I
visit quite a bit- and am half Norwegian

The major objections to killing whales are
Intelligence - even if they're only as intelligent as humans they
deserve a certain level of respect.
<http://mindprod.com/intel.html> has some information / speculation.
Cruelty - while far from perfect, the slaughter of farmed animals is
organised to minimise suffering.
<http://www.wspa.org.uk/data/080304_173035_TroubledWatersWhaleReport.pdf>
In his foreword to the report, naturalist and broadcaster Sir David
Attenborough describes how it contains: '...hard scientific
dispassionate evidence that there is no humane way to kill a
whale at sea.'
Rarity - there may be a few million of the most common whales.
This is too few even compared to the human population of Norway.

perhaps get yourself invited on a whaling trip, they invited the press
on board a couple of weeks back to explain their point of view.

Those seal skin slippers from Bergan market are great - they seem to last
years.
Luckily I have a friend in Bergen who sends me new ones every 10 years or
so.

Well, I just don't look then, because I've never noticed whale meat
there- or it's never been pointed out to me. I've certainly never eaten
it, and I grew up around 30 miles outside Bergen.

It certainly was there about 5 years ago. At several stands.

Which is why I conceded that I didn't notice it- whale meat just doesn't
figure on my radar screen- it's not something I've ever had while living
in Norway or while visiting. The only relatives of mine who mention it
are doing just that- mentioning it.

Of course we used to get whale meat here in the UK near the end of the war.
Then I guess we did not know any better, actually I only ate it once and did
not like it. I lived in Leith and probably whalers set out from there as
Christian Salvesons were based there. Certainly a friends older brother went
whaling and used to come home with £1,000 for a six month trip, big money
then.
