Default Norway - am I crazy

Hi all,

My self and my fiance will be going on our honeymoon in july. I have
booked 1 week in Sardina so far. Originally I was planning to spend my
full 3 weeks in Sardinia but I have now taken the notion to go to
Norway for the second 2 weeks. Am I crazy?

We both like the outdoors - we spent a couple of weeks in New Zealand a
few years back and travelled around in a camper van. We loved this.

1) Could we have this type of experience in Norway?
2) What will the weather be like for the end of July and the start of
August?
3) Would I need to book accomodation ahead?

Any of your thoughts on this would be appreciated?

Thanks,
Dermot.

If I were you, I'd make a choice between either Sardinia *or* Norway.

1) Yes. I'll be touring through Norway (car + tent) myself too. Did Corsica
two years ago. I would never combine Sardinia and Norway in one trip. Not
saying that it can't be done, but they're two totally different experiences.
2) From what I understand, different parts of Norway have different
climates. The southern coast and around Oslo is the warmest part (can be
around 30 deg. celcius in mid summer). Further to the north and on the
western coast it can be a little cooler and there's more chance of rain.
3) It depends. If you have no set route, it's impossible. You'll probably
have no problems finding a campingsite to park the campervan every day
without booking ahead. Just arrive in time. You could also get a guide with
all the campings and call ahead.

Beware of the distances while planning your trip. Norway has a lot of small
mountain roads and (almost) no highways. A lot of the times the road stops
and you have to take a ferry across to continue. This takes time, so don't
try to cover too much of a distance in one day.

Good luck :)

Yorick.

You sure can. Norway is awesome for outdoorsy stuff.

Should be good, but apparently they have some collosal mosquitoes
during the summer.

    >3) Would I need to book accomodation ahead?

Probably not. It is not a major tourist destination for one really big
reason.

    >Any of your thoughts on this would be appreciated?

That reason is that costs are excruciatingly high. Chances are you
will spend a fair bit of time watching your money drain away much too
quickly. Still, the scenery will stay with you for life.

Depends on how well you can cope with a temperature drop of 30 degrees
centigrades. When I was in Norway a few years ago in August, the
temperature in the highlands was barely above freezing. Sardinia in August
is probably in the high 30s.

Some people enjoy this, some don't.

Outdoors: Sure. Camper Van: Probably.

    > 2) What will the weather be like for the end of July and the start of

We had 5 days of light rain, 2 days of heavy rain, and 3 brilliant cool
sunny days. Unfortunately, if it's not raining nor freezing nor windy,
mosquitos become annoying. (I like freezing and windy and don't mind
rain much, so I had fun.)

    > 3) Would I need to book accomodation ahead?

With a camper, I'd probably phone ahead a day before. In August,
half of Europe is on holiday, and every Norwegian seems to
have gone from the cities to the country. And while Norway is
large enough for the tourists it gets, there are some places
tourists tend to aggregate...

hth,

To give an impression. Going from the southern tip of Norway
to the northern is a longer distance than going from Rome to the suthern part of Norway.

While there are still very few highways, the number of ferries and steepness of the main mountain passes
has decreased noticeably during the last couple of decades. The roads on the South Island of New Zealand
as far as I have experienced them (Arthurs pass and Akaroa) is quite typical also for the Norwegian main
mountain roads. The improvements has had a price though, that is a high number of tunnels.

If you like to see more of the nature the old roads are often open during summer,
but can give you quite a fright if you are not accustomed to heights.

Especially compared to southern Europe it is

Be aware though that a number of tourists tend to buy groceries at the gas station.
Buying your food at the gas station is not the best way to save money.

Thanks for your replies. I am a little afraid of the weather in Norway
now. I did not realise that it could be so cold and wet at this time of
year. New Zealand was cold when we were there but all the days were dry
and sunny which made it very pleasant. I would not be thanked for
bringing my new bride to a cold and wet place.!!

It can make the indoors seem quite cosy though when the weather gets
like that, but yes, the weather is unpredictable. I was there at the
beginning of August last year for about a week (Bergen) and the weather
was beautiful every day! It does happen, but alas, you can't guarantee
it.

hiking.

I wouldn't be too concerned about summer weather in Norway. It won't be as
warm as Sardinia, but the incredible scenery more than compensates. Camping
is great, the roads through the countryside are stunning, and you will never
forget the place. Be aware that it can be hellishly expensive to eat and gas
up the car, but still well worth it, in my opinion.

My guess would be yes. I know nothing about Sardinia, but loved Norway
when I was there last fall.

I'm just considering a trip to Norway this year but it is a difficult
ethical question. Given that well over 99% of British people don't
visit Norway in any year, one more boycotting it is not likely to be
noticed.

Perhaps going and then writing to the Norwegian ambassador on the lines
of 'I enjoyed the countryside but I was horrified to see whale meat on
sale. I'll never visit again and have warned all my friends.' would be
more effective.
