Default New Flemish newspaper in English

Tue 06/02/07 - The Flemish International Relations Minister Geert
Bourgeois (Flemish nationalist) is axing "Focus on Flanders", a weekly
selection of articles about Flanders aimed at international
correspondents.
(VRT)
Mr Bourgeois needs to free funds to pay for a new free English
language weekly about Flanders.

"Flanders Today" as the new weekly has been dubbed should be on
newsstands this autumn.

The new weekly will be available in places frequented by foreigners
and in particular in the Brussels area.

"Flanders Today" will contain news, current affairs, but also
information for tourists and news from the world of the arts.

In order to free funds for this project the magazine "Flanders" and
"Focus on Flanders", a journal primarily targeted at foreign
correspondents will both disappear.
(Belga)
Luc Van den Brande
Luc Van den Brande's brainchild
"Focus on Flanders" and its French and German siblings were an
initiative of the former Flemish Premier Luc Van den Brande (Christian
democrat), who hoped to combat the pro-Francophone bias in the
international press.

Because few international journalists can understand Dutch, many of
their sources are Francophone and in the past this has had an impact
on how Flanders is perceived abroad.

The weekly contained a selection of Flemish news articles translated
into English, French or German depending on the version.

The International Press Association has sent Mr Bourgeois a letter to
voice its concern about the end of "Focus on Flanders".

The Minister's chief of staff Ben Weyts says it is not Mr Bourgeois'
intention to stop providing a service to this target audience.

The new weekly will be linked to a website.

The minister's office is examining how a selection of translated press
articles can be posted on the website and published in "Flanders
Today".
