My yellow raincoat?

In February I went to Paris, Lyon, Venice, Verona, Innsbruck, Salzburg and
Vienna. I went with a friend. We both wore yellow raincoats, about waist
length. His was yellowy gold and mind a more muted shade.
Everywhere we went, people openly stared at our coats.
What's up with that anyway?

Wearing a yellow raincoat is a signal in Europe that you want a hot beef
injection.

In Europe, wearing a yellow raincoat is an indication that the wearer is
incontinent.

Maybe they were just staring at you rather than at your raincoats...

Perhaps it's not a very common color for rain gear in Europe? It rained
quite frequently, both winters I spent time there, and I didn't see much
in the way of actual "raincoats" - most people seemed to wear either
leather or the "all weather" sort of things (in muted colors) as I did.
(For one thing, it didn't rain that steadily - none of our Southern
California week-long downpours!)

Yes it is. Yatertight raincoats with yellow outside and blue inside like
http://www.nanoblogg.de/pics/friesennerz.jpg or
http://www.bredstedt.de/imwatt.jpg
are worn by construction workers, and by holiday makers around the North
Sea against the windy weather. The German nickname is "Friesennerz"
("Frisian mink"). You would get stared at if you wore one at an Italian
beach probably. But maybe that is not what the OP wore anyway.

what are they called? You would get stared at if you wore one at an Italian

It's the color yellow! When I was running around in my yellow thong, people
stared like you wouldn't believe!
