Hi,
I will be in Milan and Zurich next month. My partner wants to see the
Matterhorn. Would it be easier to go there from Milan or Zurich? Any
information from people who have done this trip would most welcomed.
Thank you.

You'll need to go for Zermatt to see Matterhorn.
It's a matter of a rather long rail trip, about 4:40 from Zürich and
3:50 -4:30 from Milan.
Try to find schedules on http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
As you can see Zermatt is about the same travel time from Milan as Zürich.
Above that you'll probably like to travel the narrow gauge cog wheel railway
Zermatt-Gornergrat to have the best possible overview of Matterhorn and
that's a 44min trip one way, add on some time on the top for viewing.
As a whole it's feasible but you'll need to be out for a real long day.
Perhaps in stead of that you'll like to add on an extra night in Zermatt ?
Travelling by rail over the real scenic lines Milan-Brig- Zermatt and
Zermatt-Brig-Zürich ?

If you just want to see the Matterhorn from Zermatt, you can get there
from Milan in four and a half hours. Going to the top of the Gornergrat
from Zermatt will add an hour to the journey time.
From Zurich, it takes almost the same time as from Milan but it involves
fewer changes of trains. Timetables at www.sbb.ch and you can choose
timetable in German, French, Italian or English.
It is an easy trip from Milan, albeit quite a long one. Don't try to get
there and back in a day!

It's a less well known view but, if you just want to see the Matterhorn, it
might be quicker to drive from Milan to the Italian resort of
Cervinia-Breuil. It is a very long time since I was last there but someone
can perhaps confirm my impression that the mountain is called Monte Rosa in
Italy?

Excellent advice. Plus there is actually a hotel at the top of
Gornergratbahn. The air is a bit thin as it is over 10k feet - but you can
see the Matterhorn clearly - and its great at sunset and sunrise. The ride
up and down is spectacular. And expensive!! The hotel isn't that costly,
though.

Nope, it is call Cervino. Plata Rosa is one of the peaks that allows
you to ski down to Zermatt.

I think the good people of Cervinia would beg to differ.

Cervinia is a nice little town with some good hotels and ski lifts but
unfortunately the mountain is just a big black blob, with very little snow
(because this is the sunny side of the alps) the view of the Matterhorn
from the Zermatt side is spectacular but I had to go there three times to
see it in all it's glory, most of the time it seems to have a small cloud
attached to it.

Why not go there while going from one place to the other.
You should be able to go from Milan to Brig via the internation Simplon
rail line, then take the narrow gauge train to Zermatt, then come back
to Brig and go to Zurich from there.
I suppose the fastest although longer line is to go via the Loetschberg
tunnel and Bern. The most scenic route is to take the mountain line to
Furkapass (you could also stop and see the Rhone source in the glacier)
and Andermatt, then go back to the main Gotthard line and go to Zurich
from there.
I once did a one day circular trip from Luzern to Andermatt, Furkapass,
Brig and back via Loetschberg-Bern. I arrived back in Luzern very late
and had problem at the hotel (we had a room connected to the corridor by
a small closet in which also another room opened, the cleaners had
locked the door between the closet and the corridor, and taken away the
key).

ALMOST correct. Matterhorn is called Cervino in Italy.
Monte Rosa (literally "the pink mountain") is another 4000 m mountain
complex in the area (a bit east).
Plateau Rosa' (note spelling), pronounced Plato' Rosa' a' la French with
accent on the last letter is what you say.
Apparently the "Rosa'" and the "Rosa" have nothing to do with colour
pink, but derive from some local word indicating ice. Note that all the
area surrounding Monte Rosa and Cervino is a Walser area (Walser are a
german-language population which occupied the high part of the valleys
... the low parts are populated by persons speaking italian (in
Piedmont), italian and french (in Valle d'Aosta) or french (on the swiss
side).

Well it's about a 90 minute drive from Milan -- and a very pretty one,
to boot, up the Valle d"Aoste. I've seen it from both sides. I'd do
the Italian side, really -- much cheaper and the food is better.
Monte Rosa is huge but rather shapeless, btw, and has a glacier on the
north face. The Matterhorn is to its left and I could see it just
fine -- its distinctive majestic shape is fully visible -- although
it will be a bit more spectacular on the snowy Swiss side, if you are
able to see it clearly.
I have this odd thought that Il Cervino and Matterhorn mean the same
thing in some ancient language, btw, like "goat horn". Not to mention
Le Cervin.
