We arrive in london am Dec. 20 and travel back to JFK airport Jan 1st.
This gives us a full 12 days and want to fit in another country
visit. Some of us want to see Interlaken in Switzerland (fly easyjet
or Ryanair to Geneva or Zurich)--some want Venice ---- there seems to
be no easy way to take a train form Swit. to Venice in order to do
both. I feel we should just travel in great Briton. Do u feel 12
days is enuff to visit another country? thanx for your input--JoAnne

I don't know about the rest of Europe but most of the UK will be *closed*
for most of the period you state, Christmas holidays tend to extend for two
weeks around 25th December. We all hide indoors over-eating and having
'fun'.

I think 12 days will only allow you to scratch the surface. You could
actually spend 12 days in London and not run out of exciting new things to
see.
I reckon your instinct is right. If you must, however, visit another country
why not take the train to Edinburgh or the eurostar to Paris. Straight from
the centre of London to the centre of another capital without check-ins and
airport buses to contend with especially since you've got Christmas to
contend with.
By the way, it's the United Kingdom (disjointed one?) or Great Britain.
Out of interest, if I asked for your advice as to whether or not I should
try to cram in a trip to San Fransisco while spending Christmas in New York
what would be your advice. It's kind of the same thing.

Well not quite. It's a 6 hour flight from NY to SF, plus time changes.
Where would you be flying 6 hours in any direction from London?

As a matter of fact, one of the most enjoyable trips I ever took was to the
UK at Christmas of 2000. We did a home exchange with a family in
Warwickshire. True, some attractions were closed, but not as many as we
might have expected. And we enjoyed seeing the Christmas decorations. The
weather was beautiful -- including a heavy (for Britain) snowstorm just
after Christmas (it was nothing compared to what we usually have even here
in Virginia).
The absence of crowds at most sightseeing locations was a big plus, too.
I was also in London a few years ago for the week between Christmas and New
Year's. It was wonderful.

Switzerland & Austria)

Be aware this is a peak period for flying from the UK , many
companies essentially close down between Christmas and New Year
and lots of folks go off skiing etc. Similarly a lot of museums etc
will be closed for several days , especially on 24,25,26 Dec and
New years Day

Getting out from London to Stansted, flying to Geneva then gettig a
transfer to Interlaken will take you the best part of a day as well.

And Interlaken and most of the other ski resorts will be full.
Flights may not bee that chep for that same reason.

I would spend your 12 days just in the UK. There's plenty to do in
London alone in that period, let alone elsewhere. And don't believe
the comment about the UK being closed for those 12 days... that's
ridiculous.

Sounds like 11 full days. Even if you arrive at am on 20th, the first
day will be spent on transfer, check-in, getting settled, and being
exhasuted from the travel.

It's simply a matter of opinion and preference. Flying to Switzerland
means losing two more days on transportation, transfer, check-in, etc.
It may be worth that, if you are very keen to go there, otherwise
not..

I repeat my earlier suggestion. Edinburgh is a European capital just 5
hours from London. Go see. You'll love it.
