a fob to me is a little leather thing with a BMW badge on it show
I'm an important person, the electronics which do things like
open the doors, set the seat position etc are in what I call the
"key". Increasingly a credit card thingy.

Yes, if they lose my hold luggage, i cant move my car. I cant
take the photos which are a fair part of the purpose of the trip
or I dont have the memory cards they are on. Etc etc etc
I was already thinking of moving to ferries, if this has to
become permenant, it might clinch it, unless they come up with
better hold secirity.

Actually, in many of the cases, that is exactly what you're dealing
with. Kids who were in the wrong place at the wrong time- in other cases
people who were simply shopped by locals for money. There are
undoubtedly some malevolent people in Guantanamo (in addition to the
guard, natch) but otherwise- it's a shameful situation. Even Bush's
poodle doesn't like it. It's just another thing which brings shame to
the US in my opinion. It's a pretty good recruiting tool for terrorists
too.

One of the most astonishing things that Bush has managed to do is to
have diluted practically all the genuine sympathy which the rest of the
world had for the US on 9/11. He started a 'war' on terrorism, and I
think he and his cronies have if anything just made a bad situation
worse.

I would guess it's likely to go back to normal rules after a while.
With a more elaborate search perhaps. Possibly you have to show your
camera works as a normal camera is supposed to.
Yesterday here at the Stockholm airports the ban for hand luggage were for
US flights on request from US authorities. Rest of the flights had the
usual rules, UK flights being cancelled.
Today they've announced that all liquid things like
toothpaste, sunblock, hairgel beverages are banned in the hand-luggage for US
flights. As I can read out cameras, laptops and such things are allowed
onboard and rest of the flights aren't affected at all.

Glad to hear they're still going - ISTR they had a major funding crisis
some years ago. I briefly did some editing work for them back in the 80s.

If this stupidity becomes permanent, that's another good reason not to
move back to the UK. Just in the last few weeks I've had my luggage
mislaid twice. In the event, it just meant that the airline had to
deliver my bags of dirty laundry to my house by taxi, saving me the
trouble of carrying it on the train, but if they also lost my keys and
computer, that would be somewhat annoying.

There is no chance that the UK will introduce this
unilaterally. E* bookings to CDG would quadruple.

If carry-on is restreicted it will be introducted
Eurowide.

We've never had "ferries" from this side of the pond, but
are there still "ocean liners" plying their way between
continents? (A "Chunnel" from the U.S. to Europe doesn't
seem practical, so how else would we get there from the here?)

There are plenty of Americans who will give you no argument
about that! (I only hope we haven't become such a nation of
sheep that the November elections won't begin to remedy that
sorry truth.)
