Default Looking for a town in Eastern Germany

I am looking for a town in Eastern Germany, located about 60 km from
Dresden. I don't know the exact name, but sounds like Weiner (?!). In
the 60s and 70s, there was a Soviet military base there... Please help
if you know!

... I thought of that. :-)

It was either Weimar or Schnitzel.

I found a place called Weener, but I don't know if it had a Soviet
military base... Any thoughts?

Brings back memories of driving around the countryside around Dresden
with friends (in a Trabi, natch) in the late 70's and encountering
DDR/Warsaw Pact military manoeuvres, tanks fording a river and stuff.
When I discreetly raised my camera to take a snap or two, they yelled,
"DON'T DO THAT!"...

We had something similar in Saar in the early nineteen seventies, when
we came across a bunch of French soldiers trying to get a rather bent
missile back onto a truck.

Yoni,

If you go to the following site, you can do a search for the town. If you
are spelling the sound of the town's name like a German would spell it, it
would be pronounced like the word for wine, or Rhine. If that is not the
right sound, then you need to spell it differently. But, if that is the
sound, then you can do the following:

Here is the site: http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/LocTown.asp

Type Weiner in the town block.

Use the pull-down menu to choose only Germany.

Choose Kilometers.

For the central location, use the Latitude and Longitude for Dresden.
Those would be 51 03 for Latitude and 13 45 for Longitude. This will give
you the names of possible towns, and their distance from Dresden, instead of
from Berlin.

Use the search method of Sounds like -- Daitch-Mokotoff Sooundex.

Click on Start the Search.

When I did this, I did not locate any matches that were in the neighborhood
of 60 kilometers from Dresden. So, you may have the wrong sound. So, you
may want to rethink the sound and spelling.

Here are the results that I got for Weiner:

Beimoor 53°41' 10°16' E M U Germany 376.0 kilometers NW of 5103 1345
Böhnrüh 54°30' 9°51' E M U Germany 464.3 kilometers NNW of 5103 1345
Paimar 49°38' 9°45' E M U Germany 323.7 kilometers WSW of 5103 1345
Pommer 49°39' 11°10' E M U Germany 240.3 kilometers SW of 5103 1345
Weener 53°10' 7°21' E M U Germany 495.8 kilometers WNW of 5103 1345
Weimar 51°22' 9°24' E M U Germany 304.8 kilometers W of 5103 1345
Weimar 50°59' 11°19' E M U Germany 170.3 kilometers W of 5103 1345
Weinähr 50°19' 7°51' E M U Germany 423.2 kilometers W of 5103 1345
Wimmer 52°20' 8°26' E M U Germany 392.9 kilometers WNW of 5103 1345
Wymeer 53°08' 7°13' E M U Germany 502.3 kilometers WNW of 5103 1345

The closest would be Weimar, 170.3 kilometers from Dresden.

Maybe Stadt Whelen, but I don't know if there whas any base there. Found
that little place using the website of Expedia, search for Dresden, zoom in
and you can find every little village.
