Absolutely: they should be cities which offer *several* unique (or
close-to-unique) things of interest and great significance
(cultural/historical/geographical/whatever), which also have a clear,
strong, non-transient identity and reputation as a city. The kind of
places of which everybody has a strong mental picture, even if they've
never visited.

So my, possibly rather predictable, short list would include:

Amsterdam
Athens
Barcelona
Berlin
Dublin
Edinburgh
Florence
Istanbul
London
Moscow
Naples
Paris
Prague
Rome
Seville
St. Petersburg
Venice
Vienna

Yes, I think it would. In a worldwide newsgroup, it's always best to
avoid terms that some people will misinterpret, and there really are
people for whom "London", for example, would primarily mean the one
in Ontario. For me, 120 miles away from there, it could mean either
one, depending on context; if I went to my local Air Canada office and
asked for a ticket to London, they should ask me which one, because
flights to both are available from Toronto.

Of course, in a newsgroup *devoted to European travel*, and especially
in the context of great cities of Europe, I think it's safe to mention
London or Paris without qualification. But even then, it does no harm
to mention the country, and it might help readers doing some kind of
search by country name to find your posting.

Just for amusement, since it only involves US travel, look at the bit
titled "detoured" on the following page (rejoin URL if necessary):

I can see that in proximity of your London its an issue, probably
within the US its an issue, outside of the US it appears amusing!

I didnt know there were so many Augustas, but if you knew the Sun
"newspaper" you would not be surprised at anything their "journalists"
might do :-)

To say "proximity" about something 180 Km away is downright hilarious.

Ok, lots of places that go by that name. Still, my first thought would be
"Chile".

In Europe yes, not so sure in US.

Europe is bigger than a matchbox too, you know.
