Thanks to those who were kind enough to give advice. Most useful.
Boo-hiss to the grumps: Since this group's inception I have given dozens and
dozens of pieces of advice, many of them quite detailed and lengthy -- and
carefully accurate -- about Venice and occasionally Britain. I assumed that
I had acquired a modicum of good will on the site, and could venture such a
tangential query.

Oh, and unless I missed one, I thought the only grumply replies were
from Runge. I don't read his posts anyway! :)

I second the motion that the taxi to and from Manhattan is no great
expense to incur, especially when compared to what your whole trip is
likely to be costing. I'd certainly go for it - if the weather's okay a
bracing stroll through Central Park, perhaps a special coffee and
strudel at Cafe Zabarsky would be worth every penny and clear the head
nicely for the remainder of your flight.

PHILADELPHIA - President Bush offered encouragement to war-weary
Iraqis on Monday but acknowledged they have paid a heavy price -
30,000 dead - as a result of the U.S.-led invasion and its bloody
aftermath.

Whatever my opinion of GWB, I find it odd to blame the USA for the
dead killed by suicide bombers.

Blame can be shared.

4 suicide bombers per 54 people or what?

The suicide bombers are killing people as a direct result of the Iraq
invasion. The bombers, and the people egging them on, are responsible
for carrying them out, but the invasion is responsible for creating the
vacuum that enabled them, and sure, those who ordered the invasion are
to blame for that.

Have you seen the latest scientific poll done by ABC on opinions in
Afganhistan ?

Here is a sample:

"Almost nine in 10 - 87 percent - say the US-led overthrow of the
Taliban in 2001 was a good thing for the people of Afghanistan"

Do you give credit to the U.S. for this? Removing one of the most
oppressive dictatorships in the world and freeing some 15+ million
people?

Would it surprise you that 18 months ago these numbers were not this
conclusive? How bout Germany or Japan in 1946 ?

As opposed to the 150,000 people a year tortured and killed by Saddam? I
guess the Iraqi people are screwed either way.

It'd still less people than Sadam, the previous 'lawful' government, was
killing himself...
