I looked online, but have not been able to get an answer. I'd like to renew
my passport, which expires April, 2005--5 months from today. How SOON
can/should I renew it? Is one year too soon? I have no idea how long the
turnaround time is these days.
Thanks,
Gabe

Renew it now. Go on-line at http://travel.state.gov/passport/index.html and
download the forms you need, fill them out and send them in with the
required 2 photos, your old passport and the fee of $55. Do it before you
forget. Won't take but two to three weeks or so. I did mine in 2003 with
no trouble at all. Date on my check is 10/09/03, and date of issue is
10/30/03.

You can renew it with 9 and a half years left to go, if you really want to.
It takes about a month these days. Some peole get lucky and get it back
within a couple weeks.

Thanks, Miguel. My 20 year old daughter has a passport that expires in 2010.
She is beautiful and her passport photo (taken when she was 16) is exceptionally
bad. She wants to renew just to change the picture. ;-)

There's also the point that if you leave renewal to the last minute and some emergency crops up, you have no leeway at all.

Depending on where you plan to travel, I seem to remember reading in some
website while doing some travel-related surfing, that some countries
actually require passports that are valid for "at least" one year from date
of entry. Due to memory fade, I'm not sure if I remembering this right and
if it's true, what the rationale would be for some countries to require
this. I usually renew 1 year and 1 month before expiration since it takes
about a month to renew, just to be safe. Why wait till the last minute and
how much are you realling saving by doing a "photo finish" renewal?

From a different angle, my passport is expiring in 2008, but I only
have 2 full pages left clean in it. Is there a typical requirement
from countries as to how much space should be provided, over and above
what is necessary for a stamp? Most countries (that I don't need a
visa for) seem to be happy to cram stamps almost on top of each other,
but will this fly when there are no blank pages left?
Yeah, I know I am pushing my luck, but I am kinda attached to this
passport, for sentimental reasons - and because my photo in it looks
kinda cool!

Are you not allowed to keep your old passport (marked as invalid, e.g.
by an edge cut off) after you got a new one?
... Martin, who has kept his old ones for memories.

Yeah, I think so, but I also have a few important, and still valid,
visas in the current one I would need to have replaced at considerable
hastle.

The old one is returned to you when you renew, with a hole drilled in it.

Hi,
when I last renewed mine by mail they sent the old one back with some
little holes punched in it.
I've got a passport of my father's from the early 50s with a picture of
him, my mother (a french citizen), and my sister (a dual national) all
traveling on the same document.

As long as you're willing to pay them the fee, you can renew it anytime
you wish.

Rules change, so you'll want to double-check with an official source but
it always used to be the case that you could go to a US Consulate and
get extra pages added to a valid passport if/when it got full. My
brother-in-law says he did it twice--in 1980 and in 1992.
cheers,
