The French has used their veto power in the UN 18 times, Britain, 32 times
the USA 76 times and the USSR/Russian republic 120 times. China has used
it 4 or 5 times depending on one`s definition of China (Taiwan only at
one time).
http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/data/vetotab.htm
The site http://www.globalpolicy.org/security...o/vetosubj.htm
gives the list of vetos, who cast them and the total vote. The table
goes back to 1972.
Since then, the French have cast their veto in
When with whom what issue
1974 with the USA and the UK South Africa (Representation in the UN)
1975 with the USA and the UK Namibia Question
1976 alone Dispute between the Comoros and France
on Mayotte
1976 with the USA and the UK Namibia Question
1977 with the USA and the UK South Africa
1977 with the USA and the UK South Africa
1977 with the USA and the UK South Africa
1981 with the USA and the UK Namibia Question
1981 with the USA and the UK Namibia Question
1981 with the USA and the UK Namibia Question
1981 with the USA and the UK Namibia Question
1986 with the USA and the UK Libyan Complaint against US Attack
1989 with the USA and the UK Complaint by Libya against US Downing of
Aircraft
1989 with the USA and the UK Situation in Panama
So in 14 times using their veto, the French have voted along with the USA
and the UK except once. Once they voted their own self-interest. in the
dispute over the Comoros.
The French back, diplomatically, the USA with regard
to the Libyan complaints. France has not used its veto since 1989,
the US has used its 10 times largely supporting Israel in the middle
East. In these votes, the US stood alone.
One can not claim that the French have irresponsibly used their veto
power in this period. There is some complaint internationally that
the US has over protected Israel with regard to the occupied territories
and the settlements. This is a current and ongoing problem.
As for the present situation with Iraq, France is not in the minority
worldwide in questioning US policy. It would not be the end of the world
if France, Russia or China used its veto to block UN approval of American
policy. In fact, it is quite clear that what the UN decides will have
not effect on that policy.

Most of the 76 times the US used it were to prevent criticism of Israel (who
are still in violation of a number of UN resolutions -are we going to war
with them too whilst we're in the neighbourhood?)
