You can make that in your hotel room- waste of time ordering one!

I ordered one for room service when I first went to Athens, and I got a
lovely silver tray with a glass full of water, and a packet of nescafe,
and about 34 packets of sugar.

Sure. You'll only need a mixer, a tall glass, a spoon, icy water, sugar, milk and Nescafé.
Voilà ...

Easy- usually, when in Greece, I have a fridge in my room, and you use
the plastic containers designed for that purpose. Put everything in it
(I don't use milk or sugar) and shake. Pour. Consume.

Still totally unbelievable.
Wonderful architecture, unparalleled position, totally fascinating history.
OK, it has its 'city moments', especially outside of the old centre, but are
you therefore writing off Rome, Florence, et al?
Cairo, for instance, must be the most horrendous city I've ever visited, but
it's still fascinating!
You are the only person I have ever heard to knock Istanbul so totally.
Surely no-one else here agrees?

Even frappés have gone up-market, often served with cream or
ice-cream, and at one place we stayed the "in" thing was "iced
cappuccino". Also - they now seem to be always made with an electric
whisk, not a crappy old brown plastic shaker.

Progress, eh?

Frappés are another thing that taste great on holiday, but really vile
if you try to recreate the experience back home, even if "home" is a
hot country.

I asked for retsina at a beach taverna this summer. The guy said
sniffily that they didn't sell retsina, only "proper" wine. Similarly

(I was reminded a bit of the Monty Python "cheese shop" sketch -
"retsina? sorry, not much call for it round here")

I drink the stuff by the gallon in Crete. No problem, as long as it's cold
enough!
By far the most refreshing wine that exists.

The tupperware is fine for the job.

Yes, but a bottle of Boutari Retsina from Tesco, 'enjoyed' on a damp,
chilly night in Manchester doesn't have the same appeal...

Who cares? I still don't like Istanbul and hope I'll never go there again. There are much
better things to see in Turkey.

I've 'done' most of Turkey and it truly is a largely unrealised pure
treasure.
But if I had to vote, I suspect I would still put Istanbul at the top.
I can offer you many distinctly less enjoyable Turkish areas ........!!
We'll just have to disagree.

Hmmmmm ... I always bring some bottles back and keep them well chilled.
Still great (for me!) with curries, Indonesian etc., even in humid misty old
Surrey.
