It's that silent majority again.

It is horrible, full of old ruins and good food. Don't encourage people to go
there.

I'm biased, I admit. My first visit to Greece was a week performing in
Athens in 1993 in March. It was pleasant weather, and though I was
working, had a fair amount of time to sightsee. I enjoyed it very much.
I wasn't too impressed with the food I had, until the last few days,
when I was invited to someone's house, and then to a restaurant in a
suburb which I thought was superb. I find it a fascinating city, and on
subsequent trips to the city, I always stay there. Through reading
various guides, I've also had better food there on recent visits. The
lamb and aubergine dish I had several times at a restaurant in the Plaka
still makes my mouth water, just thinking about it! Having breakfast on
a hotel rooftop viewing the acropolis on a warm morning as the orange
hues of the morning sun gradually alight upon the city is a great
experience IMO.

Almost everyone I talk to, and even a lot of guidebooks. Lonely Planet
even said that while ancient Athens had a large influence on Western
civilization, "few fall in love with the modern city".

Yet you have a few people here disagreeing, who are also pretty regular
posters. Why do you think that is?

Falling in love with the modern city isn't the same thing as enjoying
your time there.

I didn't say that no one could possibly like it or find their time
there rewarding. My personal view is that it isn't worth more than a
day or two for most travelers, and since the OP wanted to know whether
the negative reports he had heard about the city were justified, in my
opinion they are. And I think the rest of Greece contains many
beautiful, interesting places, which is another reason I would advise
someone on a short trip to see Athens quickly and move on. I accept
that others can disagree.

Only been to crete (thrice) but it really depends. There's beautiful places as
soon as you leave the tourist compounds but I don't like creek cities.
They always look as if an airplane lost some houses while on its way to
somewhere else.
My first impression was always the dirt.

What about some of the other european places like Malta, (also
very historical) and maybe spain or portugal?

Lots of Greetings!

I'll side with Iceman on this. Athens is indeed a shithole in an
otherwise beautiful country. I enjoyed my time there, but not because
of the sites.

Mallorca-fication is a partial myth. There are some fairly unpleasant
spots spoiled by oafish brits and Germans eating chips and getting
drunk, but the majority of the island is still pleasant. I think you
just have to ensure you avoid such spots in Greece. I wouldn't know
where they were. Perhaps someone else can advise.

can we do a list?
Maybe the thing to do is check package brochures and rule out the
popular destinations?

or do "rich" foreign tourists push up prices? Either directly or as
the country becomes richer itself.

Crete: I'd suggest avoiding Heraklion and east along the north coast. West
and south should be fine.

Rhodes: Avoid Faliraki obviously, and much of modern Rhodes town beaches.
Most else should be OK.
