My impression was that it was the Euro wot done it. We guessed that
maybe Greek restaurant owners saw that pizzas (for example) in UK
France or Italy cost 15 Euros or so, and doubled their prices to match.

In 1997 in Gialova near Pylos, a pizza cost the same as in NL and twice the
price of a good Greek meal next door.

Avoid Heralkion all together - ghastly place, unless you are 18 and like

Western Crete is superb

Their Archaeological Museum is fantastic! I visited it twice.

A lot more travelers agree with me than you, and I've enjoyed and
appreciated many ancient sights around the world. Athens has a bad
reputation for a reason. It has a tiny bit of history surrounded by a
huge amount of urban sprawl, and is the one lowlight in an otherwise
beautiful country.

BTW, my friend is 24. His "past" does not go very far...

All the more reason to go to Turkey instead.

Tonight was my last night as a visiting professor at the conservatory
here in Barcelona, so some of the students asked if I'd like to go for a
drink after the last class. Was 10 of us, and several rounds of beers
and some tapas, later, I decided to pay. On the way to the bar, I
checked to see if I had enough money, hoping 80 euros would cover it.
The bill was 22!

I haven't been to Greece since the euro, but based on trips in 1993,
1996, then 2000 and 2001, there seemed to be increases on every trip.
The euro certainly must have increased prices- it did so everywhere
else.

Croatia is still cheap, and closer to a lot of people. Slovenia, despite
the vibrant economy, is still pretty cheap, though more expensive than
Croatia.
