CURIO. During Carnival days the number of
tourists grows, and that brings a growth of
another kind... pickpockets. Obviously, the
Police know about the problem and take the
necessary precautions. To escape detection, the
policemen blend in -- by putting on fancy-dress
costumes. On Monday, 23 February, on the Rialto
Bridge, they caught a group of five Romanian
thieves in the act of picking a Hungarian
tourist's pocket. When the fivesome was
transported to the precinct, their pockets
contained four billfolds, six mobile phones, and
several credit cards that were pinched in less
than an a hour's time!

I always understood the dips got rid of the loot
within minutes by passing it off to accomplices
who met up later.

I was strolling on the Lido recently, and, in the midst of a crowd, I felt a
hand in my pocket. I grabbed the hand and the person attached to it and
dragged him into the water. A policeman ran up and asked me what I was
doing. I told him I was just taking a little dip in the sea.
