What's the best travel guide for a first-time visitor to Vienna? I'll only have
about a day and a half for my visit next June but I'd like to see as much as
possible. Thanks.

Unfortunately a day and half will barely get you started in this fabulous
city. After half a dozen trips to Vienna averaging over a week each, I find
that I'm just scratching the surface. I would suggest that you try to stay
in the 1st. district as a goodly portion of the main sights will be within
easy walking distance and help you maximize your time. The Hofberg area
alone has a large number of different museums with everything from china and
porcelain to the Royal Lipizzaner Horses so they're bound to have something
of interest. Nearby, Stephansdom is one of Europe's more formidable
cathedrals and most certainly the centerpiece of Vienna. If you're lucky,
your visit will coincide with one of the cathedral's frequent evening
classical music concerts. The Operahaus is also a must see. Nearby,
Karlskirche is arguably one of the most beautiful structures in western
Europe. Farther out, you would be remiss to not visit either Schoenbrun or
Belvedere palaces. Either can easily be a full day excursion. Back in the
1st. district, an evening stroll down Graben is almost mandatory. While
the Sacher hotel may not have the best torte in the world, a stop for
Sachertorte and coffee at the hotel should be a part of the Vienna
experience (albeit an expensive part).

so true...
If you're into modern and contemporary art, the new Museumsquartier is
absolutely not to be missed. Across the Ring from the Hofburg.

For my last trip I used http://www.wien.info/
for online search and special offers in addition
to Michelin green guide "Wien". Worked well,
used just some hotel staff advice for restaurants
once on site.
But a day and a half is short, definitely to short
if you are just somehow interested in arts and
history .......
Enjoy your trip
