Default French/Iraq Secret Service in Partnership - BBC

French Iraq 'plot' inquiry urged

Claims that the French security services worked with Iraq to disrupt a
conference on the widespread use of torture and murder by Saddam
Hussein's regime should be investigated by France's parliament, a Labour
MP said.
Ann Clwyd says that documents uncovered in Iraq's foreign ministry by a
British journalist indicate a co-ordinated effort to undermine a Paris
meeting of Indict, the organisation she founded to press for legal
action against members of Saddam's regime.

Ms Clwyd has been a tireless campaigner
Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has already pledged to investigate the
alleged incident and make a written statement to MPs, she told BBC Radio
4's Today programme.

Ms Clwyd - an advocate of attacking Iraq to remove its regime - said she
had chaired the conference in 2000 which was aimed at raising the
profile of Indict in France.

Death threats

"If these documents that have been found in the foreign ministry in
Baghdad are accurate it shows that the French secret service and the
Iraqi secret service worked together to disrupt an Indict conference
that we held in Paris three years ago.

"It was certainly disrupted and there are memos in the files ... that
show [former Iraqi information minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf] is the
same man who wrote the memo saying that he had been 'successful in
disrupting the enemy conference'.

"This is a memo sent to Saddam Hussein and there are other documents
showing that the Iraqi secret service and the French secret service
worked together to do exactly that.

"We got a telephone at our office in London ... threatening to kill
everyone at the conference.

The Iraqi information minister may have had a sinister role
"At the same time the British police received a warning that everybody
at the Paris conference would be dead by the end of the day."

Ms Clwyd went on to say that during the conference - attended by the
wife of the former French president Francois Mitterrand - an Iraqi man
had been found secretly filming people giving evidence of the torture
they had suffered at the hands of the Saddam regime.

"The French police let this particular man go along with the video tape
after confirming he did have diplomatic immunity."

The man had been attached to the Moroccan embassy in Paris and
complaints were subsequently issued to their ambassador and the French
authorities, Ms Clwyd said.

I don't see anything about this in the French press. Why is that?

Come on. French press may be somewhat French-centered. But less so than US
press is US-centric.

Glad to see that you sign your name at the end of your post.

And why would US propaganda not leak some made up story to a British member
of parliament to make it sound more reliable?

Yeah, just like all the stories about your buddy Castro executing 3
people summarily with no trial in a week and imprisoning a whole raft
of others for 15 years or more because they merely disagree with his
rancid prison island that you love to support with your trips. Just
US propaganda.

There you go again.

1. Castro is not my "buddy". I don't know the man personally and I have
mixed feelings about his politics.

2. Your president Bush is responsible for far more deaths than Castro.

3. Your president Bush is locking hunderds of people up with no trial and
for an undefined period of time in Guantanamo.

Again, I don't support all of Castro's policies and wish there would be an
honest system of law in Cuba and more personal freedoms there.
Also, I don't support all of Bush's policies and wish there would be an
honest system of law in the US and more personal freedoms there.

And you sleep on and believe everything that is told you by the US
government and their instruments of "information".

And thanks for the compliment. If someone like you calls me an "idiot
scumbag" I take it as a big compliment. Have a nice day!

Under Geneva Conventions these prisoners have no rights since they
are classified as "Unlawful Combatants". Since they deliberately target
civilians, hide as civilians, and are not a standing army they can be
classified as such and should be classified as such. As far as their
treatment (Solitary Confinement, shackles, etc) (we have all seen this
on the TV), this is to protect their Guards.
In Pakistan, while in custody, several of these guys killed their Guards
and tried to escape more than once. Just Common sense.............

Despite this, they are still being treated via certain Geneva Convention
Guidelines. In fact, several prisoners released earlier this year and
subsequently interviewed by Non-US media, stated their treatment was
excellent (3 meals a day, access to pray, etc)
In fact, many said they were better off in Cuba then they were in
Afghanistan ie. well fed, better clothes, shelter, etc.....

In regards to Cuba, were is the European Outrage for the prisoners
rounded up recently (some executed)?

Only defined as such by the US. The US locks people up with no trial, no
legal representation, no consular contacts, etc. Against all international
laws.
The US has stopped being a state of law and is the same league with Iraq,
North Korea and Cuba now.

Sorry but the term "Unlawful Combatants" isn't included in the Geneva
Convention.
You may be a combatant,a crime or an innocent civilian that's all.
