I'm planning to spend a couple weeks this summer in France and Italy and
will get a "10 days within 2 months First Class France & Italy Saver pass"
with a friend.
We plan to use it for trips from Irun to Paris, Paris to Lyon, Lyon to Nice,
Nice to Venice, Venice to Modena, Modena to Florence, Florence to Pisa
daytrip and back, and then Florence to Rome.
I assume that the $449 10 travel days of use pass will be much cheaper than
buying individual first class tickets to all these destinations.


However, would the Eurail pass covering the overnight trips from Irun to
Paris and Nice to Venice include the cost of the first class sleeper beds?
If not, how much additional would it be per person?
What are the costs of reservation fees for each trip segment? Can you make
reservations online when using a Eurail pass?
Does the France and Italy pass cover the trip to Paris even though the train
actually originates in Irun, Spain?

That site seems to very geared towards trains going to and from London.

I'm trying to find out what the supplement is per person in a 2 berth gran
classe sleeper with shower from Irun, Spain to Paris and similar sleeper
with shower from Nice to Venice in July when using prepaid Eurail tickets.

Depending on the cost of sleepers with showers, we may fly between these
cities instead and then get a hotel for showering that night.

I'm not sure that you would find flights between these places, and almost
certain that you wouldn't find a flight from Irun to Paris. (Not sure what
the nearest airport is - Tarbes??? Bilbao????) Irun is just a small town
that happens to be on the border between France and Spain.

To put it bluntly, I think that you would be best advised to get cheaper
accommodation on the train and risk stinking for a few hours. For instance,
if you scrub yourself in your hotel in Nice on the morning of your
departure, you will be able to climb in the bath of your hotel in Venice by
early afternoon of the next day.

Don't bother with an Italian rail pass, trains are cheap in Italy.
Florence to Rome is around 20 euros.

It is a combination France and Italy pass and we will need the train for
more than trip in Italy.
We will be going:
Nice to Venice
Venice to Modeno
Modena to Florence
Florence to Pisa
Pisa to Florence Florence to Rome.

In France we will go:
Irun to Paris
Paris to Lyon
Lyon to Nice
Nice to Venice.

The pass is $449 each for 10 travel days first class in both France and
Italy. I assume $449 must be cheaper than paying all those first class
ticket segments one by one.

It's not on the official eurail.com site.
Plus at $399 for the 10 day first class saverpass, it's only $50 less than
the similar combined France and Italy pass on eurail.com. After paying for
the point to point tickets in Italy, it's more expensive.

The entire Italian portion of your trip (starting from Ventimiglia, on
the Italian side of the border, instead of Nice) would cost about 120
euros in 1st class, a bit more or less depending on what class of
train you take for particular trips. It would cost about 80 euros in
2nd class, and I wouldn't pay the extra money for 1st class as the
difference isn't significant. Note that some trains don't have 1st
class, and some would require the purchase of a supplement even if you
had the pass.

I started to price the French portion, but at the Lyon to Nice segment
I began experiencing very slow response times from the French server.
The Nice to Venice segment was already included in the Italian price,
except for the very short segment from Nice to Ventimiglia. For the
Irun (actually Hendaye on the French side of the border) to Paris, and
Paris to Lyon, I reached 220 euros in 1st class on TGV trains.
However, note that even with the pass, you would have to pay a
supplement on the TGV trains. If you add the Italian portion, you get
340 euros so far. I don't know how much the supplements will cost you,
or how much cheaper it would have been if I had always selected trains
whose price was completely covered by the railpass. However, I think
the pass might not pay for itself. Also, 2nd class is quite
comfortable in both France and Italy. You would certainly save money
with single tickets if you ride in 2nd class.

We will be travelling in July and the rail sites give errors when we try to
calculate fares past early June.
I still have no idea whatsoever what the supplement cost is for sleeper
quarters for those with rail passes (or anyone) and we do not want to wait
to find out after we are already in Europe.
Are there secure lockers on these trains to store the small bags we carry
on? If not, then we will need private, 2-bed compartments not shared with
any strangers.
We may want 2-bed compartments anyway just for more peace and quiet.
If we have a prepaid Eurail pass, how much additional will we need to pay
for the different sleeping compartment choices avilable on the overnight
trips from Hendaye to Paris and Nice to Venice?
If we were to take a daytime TGV from Hendaye to Paris, what is the cost for
the TGV supplement?
What is the cost of the reservation fees?
I cannot find these things listed on the Spanish, French or Italian rail
websites.
