European trip - proposed itinerary - Comments appreciated.
Hi,
I am currently in the early stages of planning an 8 week trip to
europe for September-October of 2003.
My proposed itinerary looks like this:
From Melbourne, Australia...
Fly to Britain
* Not sure what to do here
Ferry to Denmark
* Not sure what to do here
Down to Germany
* visit Berlin
Across to Poland
* Visit Warsaw - visit Warsaw Ghetto, Treblinka
* Visit Krakow - Salt mines and Auschwitz-Berkenau
Up and across to Russia
* Visit Moscow & St Petersburg
Down to Turkey
* Visit Gallipoli & Istanbul (especially interested in Troy /
Constantinople history of this area)
Down to Greece
* Visit Athens & Delphi
Across to Italy
* Visit Venice, Florence and Rome
- The Vatican
- The Colosseum
Back up to France
- Visit Versaille
- Paris - the Bastille, etc
- I have seen mention of a town in france destroyed (population
murdered) by the Germans and never rebuilt (The World at War
documentary) - not sure of the name, but would be interested in visiting
if it is still there.
Back to London and home to Australia
I have to flesh this out a bit more, but this my basic plan. However
I know I am missing out a quite a bit, but I also have specific sites
I want to see for myself.
Being an enthusiastic historian of WWI and WWII history, my preference
is for sites related to this period.
Within each city, where I have indicated that I am unsure what else
there is to see, I am hoping you can help.
Sites related to WWI and WWII or earlier conflicts from the 18th and
19th centuries would also be interesting.
Thanks
Jason

The French town is:
Oradour-sur-Glane

I found out about this place from the 'Remember' episode of
the BBC documentary 'The World at War' - a brilliant documentary

well don't go then !!
For a young fit Ozzy it should be no problem.
I'm surprsied that a trip to Amsterdam wasn't on the list - especially the
Anne Frank house with the WWII interest.
I'd skip Denmark and do the Norweigan Fjords instead and/or the Stockholm
Archepelico (?sp)
Don't plan too long in Athens, maybe a few days around the Greek Islands
instead.
Dover Castle while in England

Hi,
These are the sorts of suggestions I was looking for. The house of Anne
Frank would definately be something I would like to visit.
The Netherlands it is :-)
Thanks

There's also the museum at Mauthausen, near Linz on the Danube in Austria.

If they can do all that in 15 days, surely I can do that
and more in 56!
Cheers

Western Belgium / Northern France would have to be on you list too...
Lots of WWI battelfields, and a great museum at Ieper (Ypres).

Why sail? It takes 18 hours and costs more than an one-way ticket on
Ryanair.

Take a look the German bunkers on the west coast. You can find stuff
like this:

There's a museum around Dybbøl on the German (Prussia) - Danish war
in 1864.

If you are doing Italy in early September (October is already too late)
you could consider WWI battle sites in the Dolomites area (and maybe
also in the border zone with Slovenia).

If only the OP was interested in older conflicts, Romans, Danes, French,
Civil War etc etc he could spend years in Britain.

Churchills underground war bunker in Whitehall. Hendon RAF museum

Why is October too late - too cold?
I have heard that August is tourist season, and I was hoping to miss
at least some of the crush, by starting in september...

That sounds like a memorable trip!
I wonder, though, why you would spend a day (more or less) returning to
London simply for the purpose of flying home. (You could fly home from
Paris.) But since you *are* doing that, and given your interests, I wonder
why you don't spend a day or two on the way back to London at the D-Day
sites in Normandy. Including the Peace Museum in Caen.
Your route also takes you near an interesting Resistance Museum in the town
of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse in Provence. It includes exhibits about the Vichy
government and local resistance activities during WW II.
