Funny you should mention that.
I just finished reading Anna Politskaya's "Putin's Russia". She
painted a vivid picture of a government and industrial mafia so deeply
corrupt that it actually made me feel a little better about having an
ultra-conservative retard for a president.

America's current troubles may be wreaking havoc in the Mideast and
damaging our treasury and reputation, but our problems pale in
comparison to the nightmare society unfolding in Russia.

No, indeed.

Putin is corrupt, and Putin is dangerous, but Putin is not stupid. I
think he's a brilliant strategic thinker whose KGB mindset informs his
outlook. If you put him in a debate room with Bush, it would be like
watching Einstein disassemble Jethro Clampett.

I wish I shared your perception - he certainly displays many
of the character flaws that Hitler did. Fortunately he is
not so charismatic a speaker, but in today's world, I don't
think that makes much difference. Maybe Bush is merely
"pig-headed", but when a man is running a major economic and
military power, does the difference matter? (Demon or
merely self-righteous idiot, he's still capable of
inflicting major damage on the world.)

Most people lose at it and it can usually only be done on a relatively short
term basis (like 3 month contracts or options). Unless things have changed
in the past few years, one buys 1 million "dollar" contracts to receive or
deliver a certain amount of the "other" currency on on a specific date.
The leverage comes with the fact that one can make these commitments
only with 10% of the million up front. Therefore, so a several %
move in the currency in the right direction means a 10 times more
increase in the value of the contract. So one's $100,000 risk
can mean its value is $130,000 on a 3% move, a 10% move means doubling
one's "investment". A move in the wrong direction means one's investment
dropped to $70,000. In the current move from 1.30 to 1.35 is about
3-4%, so "your" $100,000 would have gone to $130,000. It is quite easy
for a $100,000 short term profit over a few weeks to be transformed into a
loss in the matter of a couple of days. Normally brokerage firms require
players to have a relatively high net worth to get involved. That is to
say losing $20,000 or more is not the end of the world. One thumb rule
is to get completely out of the game if one's loses half of one's money,
and to take profits and get out when they are large enough. Euphoria is
the big danger, it occurred at the end of the dot.com period and recently in
the real estate market.

The problem is to avoid downside risk with prearranged sell instructions
(stop loss). If you place the downside sell order too tightly, fluctuations
will get you. If the exchange rate is stuck in a range and one is
constantly trading, the trading commissions will be damaging.

Professionals have computer programs which attempt to control the risks so
individual traders get caught financing their profits. The numbers I have
seen indicate that 80% of the players in this game (in game theory
it is a zero sum game) lose.

The buying of contracts for actual delivery does have a non-speculative
goal. We did it once in buying a Parisian apartment. The normal procedure
is to first sign a promesse de vente in which one guarantees to deliver
the total sum of the purchase in several months when the final acte de
vente closes the deal and one takes possession. If one has to import
dollars one might wish to establish the amount to be imported today.
So one can buy a contract to take deliver dollars and get euros in
3 months now. This is done on a larger scale in international
trading. So buying futures is not always a gamble, merely a guarantee.

By not doing so you may have retained some money for traveling.

Buying currency in advance if you think that the value is good only
risks the interest which you might have gained and an occasional
exchange loss if you are really really wrong. Currency trading will
take your shirt on a short term glitch.

Gregory Morrow enjoys the rare privilege (the only other two being Runge
and Stephen Bach) of living in my killfile across two or more groups
(this one and alt.activism.death-penalty). His vapid, infantile
ejaculations are so devoid of interest, that I have to confess to being
unable to fathom why _anyone_ would read him (or the other two spastics
mentioned above).

I transferred a pile from sterling to euros a few months back on a
glitch and did really well out of it! Naturally I wasn't sure at the
time, but looking back it was great timing.

With the benefit of a time machine, making money would be a cinch!

He primary duty is to keep Runge occupied.

It works.

Granted. Except that some otherwise 'sane' posters, insist on
responding to him.
