Bonn is not far (about 30 - 40 minutes by train or even tram), they have
lots of interesting museums there.

You can also go a bit further along the Rhine and visit "Koenigswinter" and
the "Drachenfels"-mountain, but be forewarned, it is very touristy and on
the kitschy-side ;-) Nice view from the mountain Drachenfles though, you
can choose to ride it up on the back of a donkey (the number one choice for
groups of elderly drunk tourists) or use the small old railway (I think
they just reopend it, it's a nice little historic train). Should take you
not more than 45 minutes by train I guess. It can also be done by ship from
Cologne, then it takes about 2 or 3 hours (you can book one way by ship and
return by train).

Or if you go to the other direction, you can visit Dusseldorf, that's also
not far by train (maybe an hour). Nice for shopping an "Koenigsallee", if
you are into fashion and bring lots on money ;-)

Regards,

Frank

Fun for a day boat trips. Both the Mosel and the Rhein make great day
trips.

I would strongly recommend Aachen if you are at all interested in history or
very old sites. This was Charlemagne's capital city of the Holy Roman
Empire, and its centerpiece is the cathedral where Charlemagne was crowned
Emperor in the year 800. It is in a magnificent state of preservation and
is, in my opinion, one of the most memorable sights in Germany. The old town
area around the cathedral is also fascinating, with its warren of narrow
streets, although most of them are now filled with modern shops. There is
also a spa in the heart of the city. An interesting place for lunch in the
Post Wagen, a restaurant actually built in an old postal carriage adjacent
to the Rathaus.

Aachen is easily reachable from Cologne by train in a matter of minutes.

I also second the recommendations for the Rhine cruise, a relaxing and
beautiful way to spend a few hours or more depending on the length of the
trip you select. Boats leave from docks right in Cologne near the Cathedral.

Bonn is interesting, too, but except for the Beethoven birthplace has less
to offer those interested in the historical, although its 18th-century
buildings are quite attractive.

I strongly agree on the cathedral. The treasury there is more
interesting than most.

I'm less sure about that. But when we visited Aachen it looked as if
we had just missed a good market -- it might be worth looking into.

Go on, go on, go on, go on. You'll have a cup of that sulphurous
water, won't you?

I don't remember where we ate; it wasn't memorable.

There are nice sculptures around the place, some of them very witty.

The most interesting and scenic parts of the Rhine are (1) Koblenz to
Rüdesheim and (2) Bonn to Andernach.

The stretch from Köln to Bonn is fairly industrial. For a day trip I
would recommend a rail trip to cut out the dull bits and join a boat
for the scenic sections.

Downstream sailing is much quicker than upstream, so this would also
be a consideration for day trips.

A good trip for section 1 would be the 14:30 Bingen to Koblenz
service, and for section 2 the 14:30 Koblenz-Köln.

Koblenz is one of the most beautiful spots I have ever been to, so I
would recommend it too. Also around the Koblenz area there are a few
castles and vineyards too - though I haven't been to any.

Cheers

They give you a straw to drink it with.

The recommendation to visit Koblenz is a good one.

Can add Trier too with all its Roman ruins

Great recommendations so far! Aachen is a really nice place--the outdoor
cafes on the huge market square make for a great evening too there.

For the boat ride, I think going south not as far as Bingen, but getting off
in Bacharach instead (change in Koblenz) is nice, because Bacharach is
particularly, um, quaint. From there you can take the boat north (and
taking the boat north is the way to go--because it travels MUCH faster with
the current than travelling south against the current). I like getting off
in St. Goar (not going all the way to Koblenz) because St. Goar is small,
nice, and has good restaurant options, whereas Koblenz is more of a
war-flattened city where you have to take a bus to the train station from
the boat dock. Another option is to get off in Braubach and tour the
Marksburg (the only castle on the Rhine that is not a ruin), though you have
to get there before 5pm for a visit/tour http://www.marksburg.de/default.htm
before catching the once-hourly train to Koblenz and transferring to
Cologne.

Stolzen Felz on the other side of the river is also not a ruin,
neither is the castle on the island in the middle of the river.

There are some excellent recommendations coming out.

Unfortunately I am going on a business trip so won't be able to take
advantage of the day trips myself but my travel companion who is coming
along for the ride (and the paid-for hotel room) is sure to have a good
choice.

Hopefully I will get taken out for some business lunches/dinners and can
come back and share some good restaurant recommendations.
