Default Cultural tourism on the increase in Romania

"Nature and culture" -- this is the newly found branding slogan for
promoting tourism in Romania.
In the last two years the number of tourists visiting Romania has more
than doubled. If 10 years ago the holiday destination in Romania was
the Black Sea and perhaps Poiana Brasov in the winter, now the world
has discovered the mountains with breathtaking scenary, the ancient
traditions that are still preserved in village communities, the
romantic medieval cities, the painted monasteries of Moldova and the
wooden churches of Maramures.
Besides, there is always a city within driving distance where you can
access the internet, stay in a 4* hotel, go to a night club etc. if you
are so inclined.

Good Taste Travel can give you all these -- and more!
http://goodtastetravel.95mb.com/

A week of touring Romania starts at only $640 (excluding flights).

"We're not as bad as Albania" -- this is the newly found branding
slogan for promoting tourism in Romania. In the last two years the
number of tourists visiting Romania has more than doubled, from 5 to
11. If 10 years ago the holiday destination in Romania was Dracula's
Castle and perhaps Dracula's Half-Pipe in the winter, now the world has
discovered Dracula's Chapel, the DraculaLand theme park, and Dracula's
Outhouse. The mountains with their breathtaking car accidents, ancient
traditions like licking goat's blood off naked virgins to celebrate the
harvest that are still preserved in village communities, the romantic
strip clubs, the painted railings of Moldova and the wooden benches of
Maramures. Besides, there is always a city within driving distance
(assuming you aren't carjacked) where you can use a proper toilet, eat
food that isn't grey and won't give you the runs, and most importantly,
buy a plane ticket to a real country.

I have had experience of Romanians outside of Romania and therefore would
not put going to Romania on the top of my 'wish list' .

As long as I can give the goat's blood a miss, I'll give it a try.

I spent 2 weeks in Romania and put Romanians slightly ahead of Poles
but miles ahead of Bulgarians. Bucharest seems to bring out the worst
in people though, what else do you expect from a city.

It comes as a package, no goats blood, no naked virgins.

Bah! I guess it's Weston-super-Mare again then.

On second thoughts, probably not so many virgins there either, naked
or otherwise.

Yes Romanians are a fairly backwards and stupid people - but then that
pretty well describes *everybody* in the Balkans...they are Europe's
equivalent of what we in the US call "trailer trash", e.g. low - rent white
trash/hillybillys.

According to statistics Romania is safer than many western european
countries, not to mention the USA.

Although it is indeed true that many roads are absolutely awful and sex
and gambling seems to account for a two digit percentage of GDP.

Driving in Bucharest is a thrilling experience, though :D

I think many of the 'usual suspects' and pikey Romanians have gone to
places like Barcelona to rob tourists of their personal valuables.
Maybe Romania is safer than the rest of Europe because of this ? But I
would not want to travel anywhere near this country until I knew what
principles they stood for. This county could be in the Europena
Economic Community in the next few years. Why ?

Well, like in any other country, there are good things and bad things
about Romania... Someone coming from the outside might spot the bad
things better than we do.

However, when I visit a place I don't let the bad bits spoil the good.
There is also the challenge and the fear of encountering the Different
-- way of life, values, everything. Ignorant people think/feel that
Different=Bad.

It is always a good thing to be open minded. If you are not, it is your
loss. We won't cry after you.

Default Re: Cultural tourism on the increase in Romania

I loved Romania. Perhaps it was because I had a wonderful Romanian
colleague in Toronto. Romanians, part Latin, part Slav, are truly
unique and quite fascinating (and the women are gorgeous).

Take the country for what it is: A former communist dictatorship that
isn't doing to good. Bucharest isn't the most exciting (or safe)
place on earth, but the Palace deserves a visit. If you had any
communist leanings before visiting, they will go out the window.

Romania is also on the way to Turkey.

Like the French, Romanians complain a lot. Unlike the French, they
complain about themselves, their family and their country. In that
sense, it is refreshing. However, there are certainly poorer places and
many Romanians seem to think they are the only poor people on the
planet.

Ethnic tensions are just beneath the surface. Gypsies (Roma) are
particularly identifiable victims of this.

I saw two kids, maybe age 10, sniffing glue on the subway in Bucharest.
It was shocking to say the least. However, I know it is a problem right
here in Canada (on Indian reserves).

Romania is cheap enough that you can spend some time there without
being obsessed with getting your moneys worth. If time is money,
however, you should probably skip it.

The foliage, climate and latitude are remarkably similar to Quebec's.
So it is interesting to see how they adapted differently.

Same question I have been asking. I was all for the EU expansion until
I recently read that. Utterly premature.

I am glad the plan has been derailed for the time being.
