You wasted hours? That's very ineffecient. If I'm booking a couple of
weeks in advance, I'll get cheap fares. On some routes, you'll get them
a day before, such as my trip to Lichfield last week, but that's too
rare to count on.

Fridays and Sundays are the busiest travel days on the WCML, and the
hardest to get cheap fares. However, they are there. Booking a week or
two in advance will get you the advance 37 (value advance B) fare,
booking 4 weeks in advance the cheapest 25 (value advance C) one. I
just checked, and it took a minute, not hours.

Nor would I, but that's pretty much what's being compared here in the 5
euro range.

Every weekend? don't you normally travel to London on weekdays?

You can't possibly have just checked the situation weeks ago. There were no
cheap fares. End of discussion as far as I am concerned.

EUR 5,50 buys a McD and a cup of coffee in NL. Hardly a meal.

A take away for one from a Chinese restaurant is usually more than enough for
two and depending on what you order could cost less than EUR 11.

I travel whenever I have to travel- my work isn't weekday based. It's
easier to get cheaper fares Monday-Thursday IME, but if I know my travel
plans far enough in advance, I can get them on weekends.

In fact, I travelled from Manchester to London on April 27, returned
April 29. I booked the tickets on March 24, and I got the 25 fare.
Manchester and Stoke-on-Trent are in the same quota control for these
tickets. It sounds to be more like bad luck and not booking ahead far
enough. But you're right- I can't know the exact situation- but these
tickets patently do exist- I use them all the time. I still don't
understand why it took "hours" to find the fares. It's a very effecient
website as these things go...

Nope.

Nobody ever buys dinner on the way out, everyone I know brings
sandwiches...

Coming back, I know Hull quite well and go and find some breakfast.

So meals on the ship at 'that end' only.

Despite which the restaurant is full and there are queues. All the window seats
are occupied by people on cheap coach trips.

One attraction of the restaurant is that it is Non Smoking. Elsewhere Non
Smoking is based on the no pissing in this part of the swimming pool principle.

Ah! Tell me where, because whilst the meals on the English boat are reasonable
value, the food on the Dutch boat has become really bad.

Because we started looking weeks before and we never found a cheap fare.
Obviously if you find one first time it doesn't take weeks.

If you know what date you're travelling, it takes a couple of minutes to
check if there's a cheap fare. If you don't find a cheap fare for a trip
in a couple of week's time, you won't find it on the same date if you
check again. The fares are usually available up to 2-3 months in
advance. Even if you're just searching for "any Friday and Sunday" it's
only going to take a few minutes to check- that's what I did just now
after all- I checked every weekend on that route between now and the end
of July.

Fish and chips are also, but even if they're good, I would only want to
eat it once on a trip.

We thought it was like booking on Easyjet. Are you saying that the cheap fares
offered are fixed months in advance?

In UK or in NL?

It looks like we will have to make do with taking a packed lunch :-)

The number of cheap fares on each trains is fixed, so when the cheapest
are gone, only the next cheapest is available, and when all the cheap
fares are gone, only standard fares are available. They are usually
available 2-3 months in advance. I've read (on uk.railway, one of
Usenet's best fora BTW) that sometimes you might have difficulty booking
4 or more weeks ahead, as you come up to the point when more fares will
be released. Oddly, I don't remember encountering that, and I usually
book tickets to a variety of destinations each week.

I thought that was similar to Easyjet, only that easyjet release their
fares much further in advance?

The rail fares are definitely quota controlled- on trains I had no
problem getting a cheap ticket a week in advance, they are generally
quite empty. On Sundays, which are difficult to get cheap tickets on the
WCML, the trains are full and if you don't have a reservation, you might
not get a seat, though you can sit in first class for an extra 15...

Easyjet & Jet 2 play a complicated game of trying to match anticipated sales to
current demand, The prices fluctuate almost continuously.

OK thanks for the info, David. IMO UK long distance north south train routes are
substantially faster than any equivalent elsewhere in Europe, except France.

Both. I first visited Amsterdam as a 15 year old, travelling with a
school friend, and we survived by eating a huge amount at breakfast, and
then having chips and mayo later in the day. I remember being enthralled
by all the flavours of mayo!

Those breakfasts were incredible. We stayed at a hotel near the Vondel
park, and while our accomodation was "student" class, we were actually
in the attic of the first class hotel (Kok, not sure if they're around
still) and got to have breakfast there. We were frequently the only
people having breakfast, so the Glaswegian, Liverpudlian and Lisboan
waitresses would chat and joke with us...

Or buy sandwiches! They're certainly pretty good in the UK.

I ate at a cheap sushi place near Amsterdam Centraal on a trip a few
years ago- I think I had a bento box for around 10 euro, and it was very
good.
