5 euro will get a good kebab-ish meal anywhere in the UK. I'm probably a
bit dense, but I prefer sitting down and having a satisfying 3-course
meal with a half bottle of wine for 10 euro in Spain.

(I did complain about the 10 euro meal in Spain a few months ago, but
it's still much better than felafel.)

Plus the cost of getting there everyday :-)

Oh, that's cheap!

It cost less for me to fly to teach in Barcelona this year than it did
for other professors to take the train from Madrid or France!

Demonstrating yet again how expensive even subsidised train travel is.

To a point. If I had to travel to Barcelona buying the flight a couple
of days before, I wouldn't fancy my chances. I paid 210 for a one-way
from Liverpool to Girona last year- fully refunded as the flight was
cancelled FWIW. People do the same thing here- comparing the train from
Manchester to London to the plane. Yes, it's actually possible to find
train fares well above plane fares, but ones you actually compare like
for like (i.e. book ahead via fully flexible) you usually get a 3 to 1
price ratio in favour of the train...

I wonder if the professors travelling by train to Barcelona were really
getting the best deals?

There didn't appear to be any cheap deals on the Stoke on Trent London route
irrespective of when you bought a ticket. Nor are there any really cheap deals
on the route between Stoke on Trent and Scarborough.

Irrespective is a load of crap."Didn't appear to be" is meaningless.
There are plenty of deals available at the moment, depending how far you
book ahead- 2 weeks is better than one week. I don't have a clue what
your "Didn't appear to be" referred to- weekends get busier quicker, and
for weekdays, you should try at least 2 weeks in advance- as with the
plane, which I referred to.

> Nor are there any really cheap deals
> on the route between Stoke on Trent and Scarborough.

There isn't anything on that route, but then again, I can't think of any
way that the plane would compete with it. It's unfortunately one of
those weird routes where you'll get a cheaper advance deal by booking
two tickets- one from Stoke to Mancester- then to Scarborough. I'm not
defending it, but that's what it is.

No it's not meaningless, it's reality. I read what you have been posting about
cheap trips and wasted hours looking for cheap deals, there weren't any, no
matter how many weeks we looked in advance.

The trip was go on Friday return on Sunday. She started looking much more than
two weeks in advance, the trip was three or four weeks ago.

She saved GBP4 doing that.

Plane? I was thinking of a car.

Day trip to Holland with the car is about £120 for two at the moment,
including two nights on the boat.

If you live up here it's a sight easier and cheaper than driving down to
Dover.

A trip for a one or two week return is substantially more. The GBP120 doesn't
include EUR 120 for meals does it?

I bought 5 open ended returns for two with a car this year. It works out at EUR
320 (+/-GBP 220) a return plus EUR 120 for meals. At the rate they were charging
in March we saved about 30% . At the rate they charge for the peak summer period
we save substantially more.

We used the DFDS ferry Newcastle IJmuiden for a couple of years, because at the
time DFDS was cheaper. Although DFDS have very old boats and P&Os boats are
quite new, DFDS charges substantially more. A bit of a shame as IJmuiden is
much quicker for us to get to than the Europoort.
