Hmmm...nobody has suggested a nice B&B on the Holland/Germany border.
Strange!

Bed and breakfast about 40-45 dollars a day/night.
Full board about 10 dollars more, if you appreciate dining with the host
family. :-)

...or have a nice hotel room with a la carte chicken in Romania for less.

Well, I've been to Hull for a fortnight (officiating in a baseball
tournament) about 10 years ago and had a pretty good time there. I did go
out alone, and it was no problem at all.
Just a shame that the pubs closed at 11.

That will have changed now, of course!

Manchester's Canal Street has always had late opening for its bars well
before the recent change in law- nightclubs were always open late, of
course, but some of them are definitely 'pubs'.

No way!

I find the Netherlands to be about the cheapest country in rich Europe.
In Amsterdam you can easily eat for under 5 euro, and goods in shops are
cheap as well. And don't even try comparing Dutch rail fares (urban or
interurban) to those in the UK, it'll stop your heart.

I might add - just to help me make friends here - that the 5 euro meal
in Amsterdam will beat the pants off anything you could get in Spain for
that amount.

FEBO? That you can do for about a euro.

No, I was thinking of all the excellent Middle Eastern places
(principally Maoz, with branches throughout Amsterdam) and the
Chinese-Surinaams joints. The roti kip at these places can be out of
this world, and it'll fill you all day for ?4.

I agree, but without the exclamation mark.

Not in my experience, but this is all about different tastes, and highly
subjective- and as with most discussions here, not much more than
posturing. That _said_, the kind of food you get in Maoz is fine- a bit
humdrum, but well-meaning. A cheap kebab at 3am in the UK is of similar
quality, price and as nutritious. You realise Maoz have branches in the
UK and Spain (ironically) as well as in NL- similar prices too?

A 10 euro meal in Spain is much better value than what you'd get in NL
or UK. I'll plump for the extra 5 euro everytime. It's a trivial amount
of money, and it's well worth it, in my opinion.

It's the dullest place to eat in Soho, that's for sure.

Northern England and the Midlands are way cheaper than London.

If you can spend 30 euro a day on food you can eat fairly well in
Spain, even in the major cities. Parilladas (grilled meat
restaurants) give you loads of meat and are inexpensive, and tapas is
also a good reasonable choice. Then there's paella and bocadillos.
And the cafes are a lot cheaper than their French or Italian
counterparts.

But the cost of food in cheap or even midrange places doesn't differ
much between most major cities in Western Europe. The #1 factor that
makes a difference in cost of living is rent.

The rail fares and public transport isn't though!

That's a good point.

I can't even get a coffee and a McD for that in NL.

Make credence recognised that on Mon, 21 May 2007 20:07:15 +0100,

Aren't all comparisons quite entirely meaningless in Horneland?
