Camping in France in July

Hi,
We will be travelling around France in July and are considering a combination of
hostelling and camping. We've hostelled in France before but it was in winter so we
were wondering how crowded it will be in Summer. The kinds of places we were
interested in include Paris, Lyon, Dijon, Avignon, the Loire Valley, etc...
- How far in advance should we book hostels?
- Would we need to book campsites (for a two person tent) in advance? If so how much
in advance?
Andrew and Sarah.

Hi
This is a function of school holidays !
North Europe starts in June, and the rush begins.
The biggest impact is French school holidays ....... making August the busiest time. You should avoid travelling long distance during the first and last weekend in August. Because of staggering the middle weekend is bad too.
The Michelin camping guide indicates for each site which months need to be booked.
In July you will need to book for the most popular sites, but many will be OK.
Expect the beach sites to be full July and August.
