Evey is one of those hand-wringing pacifists who never let the facts

A lot longer, I think. The phrase was already very old-fashioned two
decades ago (which isn't to say that nobody anywhere ever used it). I
would guess 30s.
A quick Google reveals Joyce using it in Ulysses, pub. 1922 (of course he
was an Irishman publishing in France, a dangerous combination to mention
in this newsgroup).

Showing our age (or lack of it here?) 10 or 20 years ago ?! Dear oh dear!
All I could Google was this: French letter - Slang for condom, from about
1870.

The Ottoman Empire died in 1918; America's 19th Amendment was passed
in 1920; it's only a couple of years but it's still enough time for
the Turks to have beat the US. Whether it did is the question, and the
answer seems to be "not".

The term was in regular use when I attended high school in England. That was
a while ago but not quite 200 years

How long ago AAMOI? It certainly wasn't when I was a teenager in the
early/mid-80s. Slang can of course vary regionally, though. (I was in the
East Midlands.)

Not at all Marie, I am travelling to Spain via France in the near future, I
am dissapointed by Chirac's reactions which I think is to do with French
thirst for power i.e Putting Iraquy Oil above loyalty to EU/NATO allies.
Therefore I shall present my protest (little as it is) by spending as
little a time and money as I can in France on my way to Spain.
It isn't a lot, but it's my contribution.
BTW I don't eat Israeli oranges either.
