Really? Then how come my computer generally shows three or four hundred
"new messages" each time I sign on to the group, even though I do so
daily? I'm inclined to believe not all servers deliver all the messages
- One often sees replies to a post (hopefully quoted by the person
replying) and the original message either never shows up at all, or only
long after it has collected half a dozen replies.

Yeah, I see that happening all the time also.

Your filter settings may cause some of the "gaps" in messages or your
newsreader is wrongly splitting the thread, but it might be your news
server. Agent has an option: "Server creates messages out of order."
That can slow the download considerably, but it will record the gaps
and look for the missing messages next time you download. And 300+
messages a day is what I see. HTH
