Am thinking about Europe (from San Francisco) this June. When is the first
time to start looking for flight tickets? It seems a little too early now
and I get quotes for full fare. Also am looking for specifics for open jaw
SFO to Budapest then returning from Prague.
TIA.

its never too early, or too late, to book flights. airlines are advertising summer deals right now.

It's hard to predict when the best fares will show up. I would suggest
setting up a fare watch on Travelocity for the route you want. It will
notify you by email when the fares drop. You'll have to decide when you're
seeing the best deal that you're likely to get, keeping in mind that while
you can hope for a good fare sale, the longer you wait, the greater the
chances that you might not get the flights/dates that you want, and it will
also greatly limit your ability to plan for hotels, especially if you're
going in June.
Note that if you really need to book an open jaw ticket, you are unlikely
to get a sale price at all, since those are generally offered only on
rounnd-trip tickets.
Good luck!

Why not look for a reurn trip to either Budapest via Prague by Czech Airlines or Prague by
Malev Hungarian airlines via Budapest? Both airlines fly to New York or Newark. You could
also fly Lufthansa, Continental, Delta or United to Munich (and then travel to Prague and
Budapest by train, still very reasonably priced in the Czech Rep and Hungary) and compare
air fare with open jaw tickets.
If the US is going to strike against the Iraq (and they certainly will), bookings for this summer will
be very slow. So I would recommend booking, say beginning of May, unless a
good deal appears beforehand. But...it's just like the stock market...speculation.

This is exactly the type of ticket that I have purchsed on my last three
trips. Open-Jaw San Francisco to Prague and Krakow, Viena and Prague and
Prague and Vienna.
It is not too early to start looking. But you should find your best prices
90-60 days before flight. I have always got the best prices I have heard of
anyone getting. I spend a lot of time shopping. Watch prices, watch bid
sites and see if you can spot trends.
Don't panic and don't stampede. No matter how hard you shop it seems like
you can almost always find a little better deal or another deal within
$20.00 of the one you missed. In June you will find Budapest and Prague
crowded. You might consider Krakow instead of Budapest. It is a match for
Budapest and not quite so popular with Americans.

Thanks but those two cities are set for us. We are going with a group of
friends. We'll keep checking flight prices.

Depending on demand, summer fare sales normally start after Easter.

Not really the case - if the same airline or a codeshare goes to/from
the open jaw cities you will get the benefit of the sale, assuming
both cities are participating in the sale. They just compute 1/2 of
the fare to the outbound city + 1/2 the fare for the return city.
I've done that many times, and once made out much cheaper on a
NYC/Paris/Marseille?NYC than the round trip Paris fare was.
Cheers,
Ann

I tend to agree with most of this. I'm going to be in Berlin the
first week of june, and I bought my tickets some time ago. I could
have gotten them cheaper had i waited a little longer, but on the
other hand I think I would be paying much more for those same seats a
few weeks from now. (just my opinion, of course). I very much agree
with substituting someplace else for Budapest. I think Krakow is far
more interesting than Budapest. I think the more accurate match for
Budapest, is Warsaw. If I may make a suggestion, consider a slow
route from Vienna through Slovakia to Krakow. The route has
everything; wonderful villages, ancient towns, friendly people, great
food, stunning mountain ranges and and there's nothing contrived about
any of it. It will be a journey to remember. just my opinion.
