Can anyone tell me how long it takes to get from Berlin to Dresden by
train, and how often the trains run. I am planning a day trip to
Dresden for the opera for a 4pm performance and wonder if I will be
able to get back to Berlin the same evening - late. Thanks

http://bahn.hafas.de is your friend. Visit the site, put in 'Dresden'
and 'Berlin' as the origin and destination stations, respectively, and
you will have your answer.
A direct EC train from Dresden Hbf. to Berlin Ostbahnhof takes about
2 hours and costs about EUR 30. Last train leaves Dresden 20:11 and
arrives Berlin 22:16.

Hi acca,
it takes about 2 hours. Exact: Departure Berlin Ostbahnhof at 11:47h arrives
Dresden 13:45h
And back 20:11h arrives at Berlin 22:16h. That is the last train to Berlin.
It costs ? 30,20 each way. Have fun in Dresden.

Thanks. Do you also know how long it takes to get from the
Hauptbahnhof to the SemperOper in Dresden? The opera starts at 4pm,
and its Wagner so it may run late. Hope I can catch that last train.
BTW: What would you do in Dresden, if you had just a short day?

Besides the obvious inner city activities, I'd stroll around Loschwitz
(picturesque suburb to the south east). Definitely _not_ opera

What about having a night in Dresden, instead of Berlin?
