Smoked eel sushi is to die for. Is the taste anything like that in NL?
I've never had it there...

No idea what sushi smoked eel is like, but the"gerookte paling" in NL
is good - quite delicately flavoured, I found.

On one of the cruise ships I worked on, the chef (Slovak as it
happens) was very much into serving local specialities wherever the
ship went. (That's quite unusual - normally the supplies come in bulk
from wholesalers). Bunch of Brit passengers - they enjoyed their
smoked eel starters, but went beserk when they found out what it was
after they'd eaten it!

"If I'd known I'd never have eaten it!"

"But did you enjoy it?"

"Yes."

"So..................?"

Ach, tour-groups!

Most Dutch smoked food is good. They still use real oak smoke and not dye.

It tastes of smoked eel, a bit liked smoke herring but a different texture.
For some reason smoked haddock doesn't exist here.

I've only had it in the Netherlands - and lots of it!
You snap the head off the eel, and peel its skin somewhat like a banana -
and then chomp along. None of these silly little portions on toast!
It's delightful stuff.

Normally the head has gone and you eat it on slices of toast even in the
Netherlands. Where was it served the way you had it?

It doesn't taste to me like smoked herring, which I have had, but now
that I think about it, it's not been smoked when I've had it on sushi-
but grilled. <searches google> Yes, definitely grilled- Unagi, that's
it. And it is great.

So in your opinion does normal Dutch smoked eel taste like normal Dutch smoked
herring. Forget about sushi bars :-)

Either my Dutch friends buy them whole in the market, bring them home and
eat them like that, or we eat them like that when visiting a smokery direct.
I've only seen the 'little bits on toast' in UK (and never ordered it!).
Maybe it's an oddity of my friends?
But it's the only way to eat them.
We probably have two or three eels each at a sitting, with 'raw' bread and
very cold jonge jenever - a marvellous snack - hence the 'bits on toast'
being useless as far as I'm concerned!

It can't be both totally different. Both are smoked in the same oak wood smoke.

So which smokery are you visiting? There are several smokeries around here,
where they are eaten filleted on the spot in broodjes or bought filleted or
intact and taken home. Maybe it depends on which part of Holland the rokerij is
in.

Every Dutch restaurant I have been in that has had smoked eel on the menu has
served smoked eel with toast.

Not necessarily I found a photo on Internet of people eating eels as you
describe.

It obviously isn't. :-)

Good luck! Especially with Dutch jenever which is industrial alcohol with
synthetic flavouring added.

Well, in many years, I haven't eaten out in the Netherlands overmuch, with
excellent home cooking always available.
Can't remember any name for the main one we used to visit. It was -
roughly - some miles inland from the Schiphol area, through a rural area but
on a decent small road, and was quite isolated, facing some large lakes. Not
a tourist spot - we were usually the only ones there. They had the live eels
in tanks, smoked them, and served if anyone called. But it was not set up
for serving - just a rough table/bench. I suppose they delivered most,
wherever.
One friend is a trained chef and reckoned these were the very best freshly
smoked eels in the Netherlands.

And Islay and Speyside are made in much the same way! ......... :-))
The fish are, of course, absolutely different in taste.
