Batteries in Europe-- US sizes available?
Are American type batteries size AA, AAA, and C available in Europe?

Yes. Our camera died in some really out of the way place in Italy and the local store

Yes they seem to be a global standard (maybe the only thig ?)
I've had no problems in US or Asia with batteries. (I'm from Europe)

Yes, all available in even the smallest town. Newsagents, supermarkets, chemists
(druggists) , petrol stations, they all sell them. Probably more expensive than in
the US though, so if you are planning to use a lot, you would be better off bringing
them with you.

These are certainly familiar terms to me - given how international most of the
appliances are that require batteries, there must be international standard

BTW: used batteries are regarded as toxic waste in Europe and thus hazardous
material. In most countries, its against the law just to bin them, and, of course,
you wont want to take haz goods on a flight, so you'll need somewhere to recycle
them. Now, if they are US, they wont have EU recyc marks on them and thus retailers
may not accept them.......

I found them remarkably cheap in a French hypermarche'.

a filter if you're not used to breathing air that's around 100 nanohectares of
nitrogen per cubic centigram... or just plan to spend a lot of time hanging around
McDonalds, where they pipe in the American-standard stuff.

Well, I live in England, I buy batteries on a weekly basis, and I`ve never handed in
old batteries to the retailer, and I`ve never heard of anyone else doing this either.
Never ever ever. I might be "out of the loop" on this, but I would be interested to
know if any other (British) listee hands in old batteries when they buy new ones.
