Austrian Alps summer resort?
I want to go in August to the Austrian Alps.
But there are so many to choose from, help me whittle them down please.
I won't be hiring a car and will probably go on a day trip to Salzburg
during my 7 day stay. I like walking but stop short of calling myself a
hiker.

It's not in Austria - but just across the river in Oberaudorf. I
believe that you can catch a train into Salzburg which is less than an
hour's drive. Kufstein is 15 minutes.

Not sure of your definition of "resort" but this is a wonderful place
with a steller restaurant. It's located in the mountains just ouside
of Oberaudorf with many hiking trails easily accessible. I'll be back
there for a week in May.

Well, consider Berchtesgaden - not in Austria but in Bavaria, but an
easy trip to Salzburg by bus.

It's a British phrase that we use for holiday destinations places, I meant
to say village.
Mark

Try the Salzkammergut area, can get there by train, an hour or two
from Salzburg. Bad Ischl, Halstatt (called Austria's most beautiful
village, the one that always appears on the posters), the Dachstein
(Roof Stone) mountain, etc.

Mark,
We love to stay in an small village in Austria called Walchsee. It's
in the Kaiserwinkl region in Tirol. Between Salzburg and Innsbruch. We
stay with a local family. There are many rooms for rent. Last June we
paid $95 for 3 days with breakfast. There is much to do in the village
and the lake water is warm. There is walking nearby and not hard
climbing. It's also very easy to get from the Munich Airport. I
believe August is a heavy travel month in Germany and Austria. It's a
little more than an hour drive to Salzburg. You can go via
Berchtesgaden if you want.
