Athens Hotels and Athens Neighborhood Question
I''ll be in visiting Athens in about a month. I'd appreciate any hotel
recommendations from other travelers or residents . Can anyone describe the
neighborhood around the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron)?

Never stay in Athens center. If you need to stay there, rent a room in Pireus near
the sea and metro station.

Why? It's nice, and fun, in the center.

I had a great holiday in athens - we went for my friends wedding and had a great
time, stayed in a budget hotel in an area just outside of pireus with lot of
chainsaw shops near by, opposite the police station! It was a cheap and cheerful
deal, and I loved it!
The view from the rock opposite the entrance to the acropolis is beautiful at night,
as is the acropolis in the day, fab shopping, great food.
I would only go back to see my friends though as I feel I saw all the things I wanted
to last time!

I agree. I was there in a budget hotel about five years ago. Felt safe, great
atmosphere, good public transport. I was demonstrating at a conference and spent
quite a lot of time sightseeing in the Centre myself (in odd moments) and had a
great time.

No, the hotels are bad and expensive, there is noise and pollution... If you stay in
Pirea, you have metro going to the center of athens directly, and you see the
departure of boats, Pirea's morning life...

I stayed in a budget hotel in Plaka for a few dollars a night - I just found the
place walking around for a few minutes after getting off the airport bus at Syntagma
Square. Worked fine for me.
There was plenty of nightlife, and I enjoyed being able to walk around the
beautiful old streets - and catch glimpses of the Acropolis - by moonlight and then
return to my hotel. I also enjoyed stepping out in the morning and visiting the
bustling wet markets.
Maybe it's a matter of preference. I would sooner die than live in a suburb (I
exaggerate only very slightly here); I want to be in the center, to be able to wake
up and step outside the door and immediately be surrounded by the action. And as
centers go, Athens isn't bad at all.

"Miguel Cruz" <[email protected]> a écrit Everybody does as he likes...
I was just trying to tell that in Pirea you are near the sea, you chose your boat in
the morning for islands... AND you take the subway to be in the center of Athens, you
don't miss nothing...

I have done both and don't think this is very good advice. The area of Piraeus around
the Metro and Great Harbour is very run-down and seedy. Most of the hotels seem to be
no more than sailors' doss-houses, and there is nowhere to eat apart from the
occasional fast food place.
If anyone has found anything different I would be interested to hear about it.

Yes... My hotel was ok. I staid near " Marina Zea " ( boats choice for islands) not
so far from " seedy " harbour and Metro. It's more pleasant than Athen's center.
I never said NOT to go in Athen's center...
By Metro, bus or taxi (cheap)... you can go all day if you want, visit museum, eat,
photograph Parthenon, Monastiraki, dance in Plaka...
But staying at night in front of the sea, and mornings in Pireus are nice...

If that's your choice - fine! But Zea is a *long* walk (or a taxi ride) to the
Metro station into Athens. If you want to see Athens it's not a sensible choice in
my opinion.

Re: Athens Hotels and Athens Neighborhood Question
Hi,
I live in Athens, and the area you are asking for (around "Megaron") is a decent area, quite safe, the US embassy is there too, with medium priced to expensive hotels.
I have some friends who have a travel agency in Athens, in case you want more information on hotels in the area, visit their web site : http://www.holidays4all.com and e-mail them with your requirements and budget. I'm sure that they will help.
ariadni
P.S. I forgot to mention that the area has very good bus and metro service to the city center and the port. You will not need to use taxi at all. (except for after midnight hours.)
