I have a trick for getting the charcoal going; I hit it with a stream of pure oxygen from my cutting torch.
Good starter fluid; paint thinner. Burns off quick without leaving any smell. Also, the process tends to take care of any excess arm or facial hair you might have.

I have a really charcoal BBQ here in the UK. It has a metal cylinder with holes. You pile the charcoal inside it and gets the fire going in it. The charcoal gets ready to do its job in no time!

I prefer wood as it gives the meat a better flavor. Different woods have different flavors. I prefer grape vine stalks. Pine cones as a fire starter are the best as they contain turpentine (I think) and they flame rather quickly and burn long time with strong flames.
