Default Water stains

Having the usual problem with damp etc but we have some water stains on the lounge ceiling that we want to paint over once dried out. Anyone recommend the name of a good product that will do the job. Easy to buy in UK (Zinsser cover water stain spray blocker) but need to purchase in Portugal. Or are there stockists local to Algarve? Any help or recommendations gratefully received.

My father always used oil based gloss on water stains, then light sand and emulsion over.

Worth a try - remember to sand back the gloss surface though. A quick boff with some spare gloss and then a couple of coats of emulsion and you'll soon know if the stains are blocked or not.

Or else, buy a small tin of eggshell if you want to save the bother of sanding - most "stain blockers" are just glorified acrylic and they charge you an arm and a leg.

Look for "esmalte (gloss) or esmalte casca de ovo (eggshell)" - these should e oil-based and you'll only need a small tin. There are other acrylic/polyurethane based paints that are also eggshell, but whether they'll block stains I can't say (they should, but....)

See if your local drogaria can help - you want "tinta para bloquear manchas de agua" - but be careful they don't sell you a proprietary blocker at an inflated price!

Clean & then use a Undercoat the same colour as existing finish.
Do not thin it down!
Undercoat in PT = Primário
