We are relocating to the UK in January and do not have much household furnishings as we rent fully furnished. We do have personal stuff like bedding, ornaments, kettle, vacuum cleaner, computer, TV and and.
Is it cheaper to dump this and purchase again or have it shipped? There are no second hand stores here in the north.

Can't you hire a 'man with a van' Ukkram? So sorry to hear that you are leaving Was this due to the health issues you have struggled with ?

Thanks GeniB. Not really health issues but a combination of other issues. We are up in the far north and it is not a tourist area. It is a language problem and we have no desire to move down south where English is more understood due to the hot weather.
Our family doctor does not speak a word of English and no staff in the surgery can. I have some health issues and I cannot discuss it with her.
The local Finanças has no employees that understand English. They insist I bring a translator before they will hear my complaint but there are no translators here. My tax bill of about € 12k is totally incorrect and I cannot explain this to them. I owe nothing so have to leave now

Hope all goes well for you in the UK Ukkram. Must admit I have had enough of Portugal now (for different reasons than yourself) and will be looking to sell up next year.
Fortunately in our case we never made the move full time and kept on both UK and Portuguese properties so it will just a case of selling Portugal and bringing back personal stuff in the back of the car.
If any prospective purchasers don't want our furniture I will do what everyone else does, dump it by the communal bin and sure enough Alfredo the local "skip rat" will have it gone same day!!

Also we are not from the UK but from South Africa and never lived in the UK but all our kids do and have for some years.
We are getting on in our years and I would not want to be alone here should something happen to my wife and I dread the thought of what will happen to her should something happen to me. She is totally dependent on me.

Is there a charity shop you could take the items to?

I have not seen any charity shops in Portugal. The UK has them on every street corner but not here.
We have donated the baby cot and all the toys to the orphanage and will pile the ornaments around the bin. That will be gone in minutes.
The rest of the stuff will fit into a box the size of a two seater couch. Quotes we have received so far are around £ 1 200.00.

Vanone has just quoted me for 5 cubic meters and 300 kg max for £722.00. Geeze man. I can put my wife into one of the boxes as well. Helps to shop around.

I must say here that if you want to sell stuff online in your area and have them pick it up then use custojusto.pt. Placed my TV for sale last night and had 5 responses today. Sold within 24 hours.
