Guess the best option for me (Hyundai i10) is similar - use the UK car to move stuff over, then take it back after a few months and sell it in UK?
Is there any reason why importing a car is advantageous for residents (assuming they don't have a special car, of course)?

i believe, but you need to check the period for use of a UK, or car from any country, is 6 months.

Something those intending to register residence ought to bear in mind if they're also in possession of a foreign plated car which they don't intend to import.

Initial cost may seem high to UK second-hand market but once you are in the market the resale value holds better

And the roads are never salter in Portugal; cars last a lot longer.
A car of an age that would be in the scrapyard already in the UK is often still shiny and rust free here.
