No I'm sorry , will explain :-
When the "escudo" was in use a 1.000.00 Esc was called - Conto
its a Brazilian slang word that has been adopted here.
When I got fined, the fine I remember paying was 249 €'s+change
It was because the GNR they where still working & using the old books and the Fine in Escudos was 50.000.00 or 50 Conto which = +/- 250.00€
I don't know if there books have since been revised , perhaps somebody know's

Yep, nothing useful was ever quoted in Escudos - not at c.250 to the Pound Sterling for most of the time I remember....... So a "Conto" (at c.£4) was THE expression when you bought a house, a car - or got fined! Easier to say "That cost me 250 Contos", than "That cost me 250,000 Escudos"!!
Most older people - and that includes my wife (ducks!!) - still refer to Contos and don't bother to convert it to Euros.....
Now the question, post Brexit, Italy, etc. - How long before they're back??

I have to say, that fine really did the trick. I now worry about my car inspection year 'round.
Actually, I just had it done this afternoon.
They sure are strict here; I had no idea that the makers badges [front and rear] are required.
I only have to reattach them before the next inspection.
