##
Payment of the IMI can now be done on line following the instructions on the notification (may only be via a PT bank account?) which means you do not have to be in PT to do the payment at the ATM or Financas Office

I have paid twice now ( most recently this week ) following the online instructions, within my pages on the Autoridade Tributária site , from a non Portuguese bank account. And it does work.
But to FIND the instructions for paying online from a bank account I had to go into the pop up chat programme to ask the question to get the info re SWIFT etc numbers and the References etc. you have to write in.
It can be done but take it slowly is my advice. Don't be in a rush. Remember even a single letter or number wrongly transposed will cause problems.
I could wonder why on EARTH they don't just let you pay online with a bank card sixteen digit number ( like Amazon and so on ) even if they had a to charge a couple of Euros extra as a fee ~ it would be well worth it to avoid the hassle.

Sorry to revisit this but friends have just returned today from 3weeks in another eu country, they forgot about the imi and obviously have now missed the deadline by 2days..... Any experience of the amount of fines etc usually imposed as they are panicking at Google results saying 150-3750?

Worst case would appear to be a fine of 100% of the amount due (ie the first payment amount), plus a small amount of interest: https://ana-macao-kw.pt/en/imi
Thanks Alan I will pass that on.
Their total bill is only 54euros so 100% won't be bad. Really appreciate it
