Gunfire and disorder in the Benfica Market. "Several people" involved

I hope my post came over as sarcastic................... because that was how it was meant
And people generally are not very good at learning from history recent or not............... trump had 4 years a while ago........... and 60 million american idiots still voted for him a second time.........which kinda validates your statement 'people have learned so very little from history' (shanome) .........
I have no idea how to cut and paste quotes from other posters on here onto this PC, only had it 10 years ................so still got time to learn though eh
............ and please do not try to explain it to me because if I was interested enough I would have sorted it by now..............

But isn't that the main issue that many without resident permits still stay.

And you're drawing your conclusion from that article?

The conclusions of the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) point to 1.5 million foreigners residing in Portugal by the end of 2024, based on granted residence permits, but Pedro Góis prefers to wait for the National Institute of Statistics' assessment to be certain about the numbers.[...]
[...]All of this affected the quality of the numbers, he acknowledged, although stressing that AIMA only counts residence permits, even though many of these foreigners may no longer live in Portugal, information that only the INE can verify.

In any case, Mr Flag clearly wasn't talking about either - he specifically said "were allowed to settle", hence my homing in on that particular point to demonstrate - once again - that he is incorrect about the evolution of the number he quoted.

Is it, though?

... seems to be what that particular article is about.

Is there any relevance in this (whatever it's supposed to mean) to the topic of the thread?

"based on granted residence permits".
So even if those people are all still in country, they are not illegal.
There may be some illegal people too; they're harder to count. They are the ones who (by definition) were NOT "allowed to settle".

Benfica Market
People shooting guns at 2:45 PM in the afternoon
That's the topic of this thread
first DuckDuckGo hit:
https://www.lisbonrealestatetour.com...hecity/benfica
"Benfica and São Domingos de Benfica are well-established, residential neighborhoods located in Lisbon’s northern quadrant. While they’re often grouped together, each has its own character: Benfica offers a more traditional, authentic Lisbon atmosphere, while São Domingos de Benfica leans toward a quieter, more residential and upscale profile. These neighborhoods are known for their family-friendly vibe, abundant green spaces, and excellent transport connections. Situated just outside the hustle of Lisbon’s historical center, they offer the convenience of urban living with a more local, relaxed rhythm.
Perfect for families, students, and professionals, the area strikes a strong balance between city access and neighborhood tranquility"

How many people have never even bothered to go through the official application process and are still in the country? So basically everything should be questioned as the official figures aren't even clear.
Rejected cases
In total, almost 387,000 pending cases were decided, and of these, more than 59,000 were rejected. Regarding the rejections, the Minister of the Presidency explained that “a significant portion, at least, entered the country under illegal conditions that the laws of the time no longer permitted.â€
It's not just Portugal but look to other countries and they have admitted that there's a significant issue with adult asylum seekers falsely claiming to be minors who are then placed in child accommodation.
You don't have to be left or right to see that there are issues.

I can see that you're keen to expound on the subject but as with Mr Flag, the question is what relevance does it have to the thread?
There was no intimation in the article posted, nor in the one about another incident at another time and in another place to which Mr Flag posted a link, as to the origins of those involved.

Yes, the whole point of this discussion was that people then started talking about legal and illegal immigration. How many of these rejected people have actually been removed from the country?

But its interesting to see, that it's not just the Portuguese who are more and more xenophobic against Immigrants (expats are immigrants, remember) it is also the Expats themselves
Of course rich whites are exempt
This happy go lucky sunny Portugalândia is a cynical construct fabricated for commercial gain
There is far, far, far more damage being done to our country by greedy, speculating, wanna get rich Portuguese and Legal Immigrants who lie about what they are selling to make a fast buck
In fact, I think the golden egg-laying Goose has been slaughtered already

This has been pointed out to you before but as it's arisen again, a quick reminder of the facts.
The 300k people to whom you refer as having in recent times been issued residence permits are people who entered the country perfectly legally and remained due to their eligibility, under the law that existed at the time, to apply for such authorisation. They would have had to satisfy a criterion of having a contract of employment or had to demonstrate that they were self-employed.
Those people who were not eligible under the relevant rules, or could not demonstrate it to the satisfaction of the issuing authority, were not given residence permits.
It is a complete misnomer to call those people who satisfied the criteria and now have residence permits, which will require renewing in due course, "illegals".

Almost all of those illegals were overstayers and many working illegally without work permit.
Three hugging politicians of time, decided to give amnesty to illegal workers, so to bring them in system and regulate their status. Many produced fake payslips and fake rental proofs.
Obviously, it was nuts idea and as it was open-ended invitation, masses surged over last few years. What was original estimated 50k, turned in 400k applicants.
If you chose to condone such creazy system of migration, its only your choice. Not mine.
