Hubby pays 18 Euros from Farmacia for 50 strips, would be 2 Euros if he got prescription, meter is free.

Thanks Sunseeker1st !
I may well go to my SNS family doctor and see about a prescription then!
Is he Type1 or 2? I ask as I am recent diagnosed Type 2 and would like to have an idea of whether I can get prescription or not before I throw myself into the ring of trying to book an appointment

Midgo
He is Type 2. He went to get his strips last week and the Pharmacist said to him YET AGAIN to go get a prescription (which he had years ago and let lapse). Strangely he has been to the doctor several times since it lapsed .... sometimes I despair!

'Barlavento' is such a cool name for an area - Windward (and 'Sotovento' - Leeward)

I love Portuguese nautical heritage

I love nearly everything about Portugal ... but not so fond of the food! We always holidayed in your part of the country, particularly Arrabida.

No reason not to go to the SNS GP - no doubt a routine blood test will be requested to confirm blood sugar levels etc, and then prescription for any tablets needed to control the diabetes and any other complications - often goes hand in hand with cholesterol raised and blood pressure/circulation problems. GP will also probably advise as to how much testing with the sticks+little machine is necessary if he is well controlled. Depending on how organised the health centre is, they may have a nurse who regularly looks after the diabetic patients (ours does not!!) and there is diabetic followup in out patients clinics where necessary - type 2 may not need this ... All treatments for anything diabetic are either free or at very low rate within the SNS as recognised as long-term necessary medication.
