Question Changing my postal address for IMI

Hi there,

I should know how to do this, but it confuses me every time!

I own a house in Portugal and have to pay tax on it (IMI). The Financas send bills to my UK address which has recently changed. How do I update this address in the Portal? I know I've done it before! Not a great UX.

Any help greatly appreciated

If you are resident in PT then it should be very straightforward , either use the tax portal or simply visit your local Financas . If , like me , you are non resident , then recent legislation requires you to have a Fiscal Representative in PT . This is very simply achieved and please don't take any notice if anyone tells you that you need to appoint a lawyer . I went through it all last year and , following a conversation with a Portuguese friend of many years I was amazed how simple it actually was ! Said friend met me at the Financas in Portimao , and it took about ten minutes for him to explain that he was our FR and have the relevant forms completed . The IMI bills duly arrived at his address , he WhatsApped them to us in UK and I paid them via our Banco BPI app . Whole thing took about three minutes from receipt of fotos . You're probably wondering how much this costs , we take him and his wife out to lunch once a year and have a very enjoyable afternoon . Hope this helps .

Yes, We've been through this process, my wife's nephew is our representative and he is a cheap date 😊, But we aren't resident there (not yet) and the bills are sent to our UK address ... which has now changed. I know I can change it in the portal because this isn't the first time and I can't remember how 😂
Thanks for the response though. Bom Ano!

To the best of my knowledge they stopped sending out IMI bills to non residents at the end of June last year , under the new arrangements these will only be sent to the FR's address .

That sounds right Den.

I now understand from a friend that post-Brexit I'll need to turn up to the Financas in person to do this. Even though she is a Portuguese national she'll need to do the same as she is resident here in the UK.

That answers my question.

This may be of interest.

Non-residents exempt from appointing a fiscal representative in Portugal

I don't mean to be intentionally negative here but I believe that your FR must reside at an address in PT , however Red Eric may have come up with your solution with this new development as you have access to the portal . Who said it would be easy ? Good luck .
