Car Insurance

Re: Car Insurance
Have looked but not found any. Individual sites are available but all in Portuguese. Found a big difference in insurance prices quoted. Using the broker my solicitor suggested I made a saving of €250 euros on one car and €325 on the second.
Only one insurance company I found would give NCB (called historica here) and that was Zurich though the broker.
Our insurance also covered roadside assistance (like AA/RAC coverage) and car replacement

Re: Car Insurance
All should give NCB. Zurich is a good company but im pretty sure the"franceas" are high and have tp pay even on a broken windscreen (think I spelt that wrong) in fact I can't even think of the word in english.........e.g if you have an accident you have to pay the first 500 euros of the amount........grrr............whats it called? HELP!! Point is you have to look close at the "condições particulares" then you will see why some are more expensive than others. Fidelidade has the best reputaion for service but they aint the cheapest.

Nomad,
I work for Lloyd & Whyte and we insure all our Clients UK registered vehicles with Ibex Insurance, a UK insurer operating out of Gibraltar.
The policy has been designed specifically for expats and some of the concerns raised by others are not an issue with Ibex. Please feel free to call for further info or clarification.
Regards,
Mike.

Re: Car Insurance
Hi Mike
I think I see where JDR is coming from.
There are 3 areas here:
1) You can travel in Portugal on British plates as a holidaymaker and be insured for same
2) You become resident in Portugal and you are required to convert your vehicle to the local requirements after 1 month. Insurance can then be obtained from anywhere.
The grey area, as I see it, is driving a UK MOT`d and licenced vehicle in Portugal. Either you are driving illegally as a resident, because you haven’t changed the car over (I think you are allowed 1 month) or you are claiming to be a tourist for 3 or 6months and can get insurance for only that.
Ergo if one is resident without changing over, one is driving an illegal car in Portugal, after 1 month. Who will insure that?
Similarly a UK car on tour could not be insured by anybody for longer than the allowable tourist period.
That`s how I see it.

Its insurance companies that make the situation worse by saying they can insure a UK car for a year, making people think, well if they insure it must be OK.
This is sheer folly cos as soon as you are in the country for the amount of time deemed to be resident, then you must change the plates.
It is illegal for a resident to own a foreign car, simply as that.....
The country governments write the rules not the insurance companies.

Re: Car Insurance
I heard a rumour today, from someone who was totally convinced that it was correct, that as of July 1 you can legally drive any european registered car without matriculating it. Anyone else heard this?

Re: Car Insurance
If you reside in Portugal you need to register within 6 months of settling in the country. If you have owned the car for less than a year before settling in Portugal you'll have to pay registration tax (which is very expensive). If you register the car without paying registration tax, you cannot sell it within 5 years (otherwise you will lose your exemption and will have to pay it).
There are pdf files on the internet available of the new law (in portuguese), just google: lei 22-a 2007

Re: Car Insurance
Thank you Novulus, I've scanned the Diario article and will read it again in the mornng, as it's past my bedtime. This is one of those issues it will be good to have a correct answer to instead of a lot of rumours. Shame I've been a resident too long to benefit, I'd dearly love a motorhome but can't afford one here!

No, according to the new vehicle tax law which came into effect on that day non residents can drive a car with foreign registration in Portugal 183 days in each year.
