Re: Buying camper van advice
hi
importing a camper van from the EU into Portugal is do-able but not without its bureaucratic hassles - like a car; also you should calculate in advance if after all the import taxes and fees it's still a good deal for you
as otherwise a more straight forward solution would be to buy a Portugal-registered camper van, as the only bureaucracy you need is to register it in your name + insure it
also note that some camper vans are "home made" i.e. someone took a regular van and modified it i.e. they lack the homologation; so next time you go do the mandatory MOT test (IPO/IPV) it may not pass - so the best would be to check the logbook (DUA) and see if it's correctly homologated there as a camper van and count how many seats it has in there
a more "secure" deal would be to buy from a dealership, as technically they're more legit and some offer a 6 month/1 year warranty; but you also have the choice of buying directly from a private individual (less "secure", no warranty, but cheaper in most cases)
good websites to browse are https://www.standvirtual.com/, https://www.custojusto.pt/ and https://www.olx.pt/
it's also in my bucket list to get a camper van one day... and I personally have a "thing" for Mercedes-Benz, so I'd get a Vito/Viano or Sprinter myself... also because their engines last forever if well maintained... and don't require the expensive replacement of the timing belt every 100 000 km (as opposed to other vans, like the popular Volkswagen Transporter/Caravelle/California, for example)
regards
