Default Age Restriction - Car Insurance.

Hi Everyone,

We are in the process of a move to Portugal.

Looking at Car insurance - received a bit of a shock when Broker stated that Portugal does not usually offer to insure people over 70 years of age for Car Insurance.

I am 79 - super fit - gym with heav weights every other day - happily never a road accident in my life.

Eyesight still good - no illness since childhood.

Still have a joint UK car insurance with my wife - younger than I - both max No Claims etc.

Has anyone else heard of this type of age restriction??

Where we would be living we would certainly need a car for transport.

Hope to hear soonest.

Best Rgds & Health to all.

They often apply restrictions to type of insurance for older cars - excluding fully comprehensive, but never heard of it being applied to human beings. 71 years old with a 15 year old car.

Maybe he thought you were talking about insurance for car hire? There are certainly some age restrictions with a few rental companies.

Never heard of that before.

My husband is 73 in a couple of weeks, not had a problem with insurance.

Maybe when he gets to 80 - but then again Captain Slow - from our village - is well in his 80's and is still driving. If you call driving at 20kmh driving

May be a bit of both, I suspect.

When I first got insured here, I produced a newly-acquired UK licence, which elicited a sharp intake of breath and a question as to whether I'd previously held a driving licence. I had - a very long time since and in another country altogether. The agent said it would be a good deal more expensive if I was to be insured as a new driver so he logged me as having been licenced since whenever it was I got the first one, despite the fact that I'd barely driven since acquiring that licence either (and told him so).

My parents moved here couple of years ago, into next street from us. Both are insured to drive their car, my dad is 78, mum 77.

I am sure I've seen older people driving here (they cannot discriminate because you're not Portuguese). But perhaps they just looked older because they led harder lives.

Some insurers may not insure older drivers I guess, in the same way some UK insurers won't insure young drivers. But there is certainly no rule against it.
